Jimmy Clausen

I really feel sorry for the Jimmy haters, well not really. The guy didn't get cut in training camp like a lot of you predicted (or demanded). Despite your best prognostications, he started the first preseason game anyway. And he actually looked like an NFL QB.

I have news which is sure to disappoint you. Clausen will likely have a lot more starts, and some of them real games. Maybe not a ton of them will be for the Panthers, but he'll get starts and will stick around the NFL for years to come.

And you guys will still be over-analyzing him to death, as if you actually had any idea what you're talking about.

I like the fact that Clausen threw a pick last night but won the crowd back with the TD. He knows the fan base will rally behind whoever is winning games. There is no real loyalty to anyone but the all important W.

I didn't see the game, but it was nice to see him bounce back. I think the one thing about Clausen that you can guarantee is that he is gutsy and will fight for it.

On a related note, I do find it entertaining that the other early QB picks that played well had the fortune of playing against 2nd/3rd stringers, whereas Cam was hindered by his 2nd/3rd string team-mates.

Not saying Cam didn't show promise, he clearly did, but people need to stop being so homerish at times.

Cam is considered better then Jimmy no? Also, we are going to put more pressure on him because he was the number one pick.

And that interception wasn't all Jimmy's fault, Williams could have turned and caught the pass or even bat it away. Heck, I make that play all the time when me and my friends are playing football.

Is that the excuse that you have settled on?

Did you realize that the Gaint player got to the ball before William even turned around. Why are we sitting here justifying why we're picking apart a kid who didn't buckle under pressure like the media kept alleging all throughout his draft, while sitting there defending what was clear a short throw by Jimmy.

Don't hear you making excuses for Cam even when it was clear that he only misfired on two or three balls and the others were the clear mistake of the OL.

I think Jimmy was handcuffed by a terrible situation last season. I don't know many veteran quarterbacks who could have preformed under those circumstances much less a rookie thrown in the fire due to injury.

I love the fact that he is getting a chance to shine and is getting a fair shot with the new coaching staff.

Not last night.

Did you watch the same game as I did? Cam was great on his first series, then average at best after that. Clausen was terrible on his first series, then pretty good after that. Not to mention Clausen played his entire time in the rain, while Newton didn't have to deal with that much. I do think that Newton showed a lot of raw talent, but there was no question that Clausen was better last night.

It seems those saying Jimmy was better are not taking into account how many series Jimmy was in there with the 1st team vs. how many series Cam was in with them (1, his first).

Coincidental that Cam looked "great" on his first drive?

I hope Cam gets the start and majority of the reps with the 1s next week so we can fairly judge both of their performances.

I don't understand how people are so quick to write off that pick 6 Jimmy threw? He gave up as many points as he led us to and still got sacked repeatedly and made a couple of other errant throws as well.

Cam had 3 legitimately bad throws, showed an awesome deep ball, led the offense to as many points as Jimmy scored without giving up any, and had WRs drop multiple balls on him.

So, I guess I could understand people saying Jimmy played better than Cam if they were just looking at the stat line, but not the game... But, not if they watched it.

    • First off, he's not even eligible for a contract yet.  You have to play three years. And thank goodness! All we saw last year were glimpses.  Yes, those glimpses were enough that I think every fan wants to see him come back next year.  But bottom line is that so far, with only a couple games worth of exceptions, he hasn't yet shown that he's a FRANCHISE QB.  He hasn't shown the consistent ability to elevate the players around him. He could be the guy.  After week two of this year, just saying that much is a massive, massive positive swing.  But let's see him put it together for 17 games.  Let's see him make the people around him BETTER.  Then we can talk about extending him. Let's not lose sight of the fact that thus far in his career, in no season has BY exceeded the rookie stats of MAC JONES. We should  be excited for the possibility, but we certainly haven't seen yet what we need to see to declare we have our guy.
    • People cared as it was happening, but after a year or two, most people had moved on. There was no public outcry to bring the NBA back to Charlotte, it just happened.
    • I can agree with that.  Fwiw, I wish we would go back to the 4-3 and bring in a more traditional defensive end.   That being said, I will point out that some thought Thomas Davis would be a safety when we drafted him.  It was of course clear early that lb was his best position.
