Jimmy Clausen

Three things I liked about Jimmy:

He definitely is more patient, maybe a little too patient at times, but he isn't giving up on plays like he did last year

He was great in the pocket, and I liked the effort of him trying to extend plays.

He showed thick skin, after a pick 6 and the booing he did great on the rebound, gotta give him props.

Jimmy did well tonight. He did hold on to the ball a bit long, but he waits for the plays to develop....he's not a read and run QB. The INT was three-fold, D-Will didn't turn to look for the ball, Jimmy held it and had a defender partially hanging on him and mis-fired when he did let it fly.

Jimmy was a much changed from last year QB. People will continue to hate on Jimmy because he is Jimmy and they refuse to forgive him his rookie mistakes. The early pic 6 was pretty terrible. Last year he would have folded. Tonight he ce back and threw a great score. He messed up then came back and made up for it.

Besides, this is the first game of the preseason and on a shortened off season with a new offense. I will say I am definately looking forward to the rest of the season. Jimmy or Cam, whoever is taking snaps for the Panthers has my 100% support.

Jimmy does have a bad habit of just expecting players to be on point. He doesn't realise that sometimes his recievers are thinking something else and that leads to picks. Regardless, he did good tonight. There are still some small things he has to work on, like pocket presence, but it's pretty encouraging. By the way, it's pretty easy to look like you're holding onto the ball for too long if no one's getting open.

    • Entering year three, and there are reasons I would look into this more before offering a fourth or fifth. He was drafted in round 2 in 2023.  His rookie season, he played 14 games and was targeted 40 times.  Targeted 3 times a game, basically.  He caught 27 (67.5%).  A TE target/catch percentage should be higher than a WR--70-75% is considered good.  In 11 games this season, he was targeted 32 times and caught 21.  Again, about 3 targets per game, with a target catch percentage of 66%. They decided to draft a TE after his rookie season. This means they did not see him as a #1 TE. He has not been very healthy (9 missed games in 2 seasons--26%). Could he be better with a better QB?  Probably.  Having said all that, he is an excellent blocking TE.  I would trade a 6th for him, but only if I knew Thomas and Tremble were not coming back.
    • 4th, 5th or later for him all day. Get it done ASAP.
    • the personal problems is something that would have to be checked out, but I'd do it.  That's how we got Greg Olsen.  He was a first round pick and we traded a 3rd for him a couple of years later.  He became our best TE ever
