Cams passing observations

really looking forwarad to seeing Cam's progression and development, guy looks like he could be a BEAST...

I LOVED how he kept his eyes down field and was always looking to make plays with his arm... Save those legs for games that matter, practice what you need to practice with in the preseason, smart decision on his part (and good coaching/teaching by our staff I bet)

hopeful to see him against teams 1s next week.

Is it me or does Cam smile way too much? Now granted we had the lead most of the time but I hope Cam can wipe that smile off his face when we struggle. Derek Anderson lol too much during a loss in AZ and see how that worked out for him.

Well, he knows it is preseason, and he knows he is learning. I will disagree with you though. When he missed Armanti for what would have been a TD, his face told the story. He was not pleased with himself. What I like is, by the next possession, he had got it out of his mind and was smiling again. I love it. Another example, when it was 4th and inches on his last possession, and he OBVIOUSLY wanted to go for it, he was visibly upset when the punt team came on. Not like, throwing a temper tantrum upset, but disappointed he wasn't given the opportunity to extend that drive and get a TD.

After his first two trips in the redzone coming up short in terms of TDs, I think he REALLY wanted to get his first TD out of the way this game. Which is good. Will drive him next week in practice to improve and get it done next weekend.

He almost looked like he wasn't taking it serious is what I'm guessing you're thinking. Looking at it now I can see how that might be interpreted. However, at the time, I got the feeling that he was just loving the moment and enjoying himself but still maintaining his composure and trying to make some good plays. I think his mind was too focused on making big plays instead of going through progressions or thinking about his other options (running, getting out of the pocket, getting rid of the ball), but I thought he did very well considering the circumstances.

I hope I don't come off as over-confident in the coaching staff, but I hope that Cam learns to trust Rivera and his coaches with the decision making. I'm glad that he is eager and aggressive but sometimes patience and thinking everything through a little is better.

Cam did pretty well tonight for a rookie in his first NFL game. I think because of his arm strength, he forces things a bit much. Both of those endzone passes were well covered and he tried to force them in there. In addition, I also feel that is why he tends to overthrow the ball. He needs to learn how to put touch on the ball. If he does this, he'll be more successful.

Overall though, good outing for the rookie.

I agree with this...I first thought he wasn't taking it seriously, but when he realized it was his fault, he was pissed. This guy is the real deal...it will just take a little grooming to get him right, but he'll be ready game 1.

Wait, are you talking about Favre or Newton? ;)

Seriously though, I kind of agree. I just don't want him to try to get TOO technical with his throws. I want him throwing the ball whatever way he needs to to move the ball downfield. A little touch would help in some scenarios, but it's hard to tell a gun slinger to loft it up there unless it is a jump ball situation.

I thought he looked exactly like he should have; an above average rookie with huge potential. All of his passes were not on target and he did a few things (some of the back foot throws) that left be befuddled but he showed good poise and that he was invested in how he performed. I also liked that he had a higher than Carolina-average ability to make the first guy who got to him in the backfield miss. At least one time if there hadn't been a second defender inc he would have made the first look foolish and gone on to do something useful.

I'm not sure if he'll immediately be the starter, none of us are because we're not privy to everything the coaches are. I do think he'll be the starter sooner rather than later though and he may end up making me eat a lot of crow after how much I bitched and moaned when we drafted him.

It's still only the first preseason game though - David Carr looks pretty good in the preseason sometimes too.

Newton has a little Favre in him when it comes to throwing bullets.

Was really impressed with the rookie. The offense seemed to come alive with him back there. Would love to see what he could do with the starting Oline protecting him, for most of a game.

Probably the most useful post in this thread yet. We all need to stay level-headed about this performance and understand that it means nothing more than Cam had a good night for his first outing. We can enjoy this until Tuesday, then we have to refocus on Miami and understand that he may underwhelm us or exceed our expectations. Don't go into next weekend with ANY expectations, and you can't be disappointed unless Jake Delhomme's soul possesses Cam.

I'm definitely being cautious with everything at this point. I'm not sold on anything. Rivera, players, the season, etc. However, I am optimistic about it all.

At least we are telling ourselves that it's only preseason and not to be TOO optimistic. This time last year we were all in group therapy trying to convince ourselves that "it's only preseason maybe they won't suck ALL year".

This is improvement!

Sadly true. :o

I thought he looked really good, great poise in the pocket and he made a few nice throws. There's a whole extra dimension to his game that we didn't even call on yet... I think Rivera/Chud wanted to see how he did mostly throwing from the pocket and he did well.

Good start to what I think will be a great career!
