Salary Increases (TD, JStew, and BRAYTON?!?)

Bonuses do not. That's why when players perform and get these bonuses everybody wins.

Yes, everything affects the cap, including performance bonuses. Remember 2006 when Pep got a HUGE bonus for making he Pro Bowl? It definitely affected the cap. I believe there are 2 classes to incentives..."likely to be earned" and "not likely to be earned". I think it's like this: teams used to be able to roll over the cap savings of "NOT likely to be earned" to the next year but they can't do that this year because next year has no cap.

The only problem I ever had with Brayton, is that he didn't always finish the play. There were several times last year that he beat his man badly, but just couldn't make the tackle or sack. He always played as hard as anybody though, so I'm not complaining.

Exactly because of the uncapped year all bonuses are counted against the cap as LTBE.

Charles Chandler, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis' 2009 base salary will increase from $700,000 to $2.2 million because he accomplished an achievement last season, which triggered an escalator in his contract.

Damn, TD was only making 700?? glad he got the increase. Despite the lack of publicity, he is a key to this defense.

aren't the bonuses already considered in the cap?

every potential money spent has to be accounted for (that's why pepper's tender offered counts towards it even though it actually hasn't been spent and won't be until he signs). if players didn't hit their escalators then the cap space would be affected in that the money would be freed up.

correct?

this would be a huge part of it.

incentives are a great thing in contracts. all should have them. cut out the guarantees and add giant bonuses for actually doing something.

Another agreement over here.

Guarantees sicken me, especially for rookies. I wonder how many million/billion dollars of guarantees have been dolled out throughout the years to players who ended up doing jack poo for their team. Give the money to the guys who accomplish something.

Then why do we hear so much about restructuring to fit under the cap and the normal salary gets translated into bonus money. It's spoke of as if it's not affecting the cap at all. Unless there are allowances for bonuses...yes...no?

Ask Cincinnati, I think they have one of the worst records for that.

Restructuring allows you to take the money you convert from salary to Bonus to be prorated over the remainder of the contract. So it lowers the cap for this year. Guys like Jake can't be restructured because he is in his last year. That is why they would have to extend him and couldn't restructure him.
