ESPN Insider: Who's the next Kolb?

People on this board who think we absolutely have to start Cam Newton are funny. If the QB is killing it, you ride the QB who is killing it. The object of the game is to win football games, not promote potential trades or justify draft picks.

If Clausen comes out and plays well and we win games, he stays under center. Cam runs some packages every so often.

If you are a Cam fan, the worst thing that you could wish for him would be for the Panthers to have to play him as a rookie immediately after the lockout. He will be under the microscope, and every mistake will be repeated and discussed on ESPN, Clausen x 100. The more time he gets, the better off he is.

I didn't watch the game, but I've heard good things about his performance. I was saying for a while before the draft I thought he'd be the best passer out of the draft, and I'd have been a-ok with taking Peterson or Dareus with #1 and Mallett with our third if he were available (not that I'm regretting the Cam pick, but just saying Mallett looked like a very good future passer)

Things go better with coke

I don't think the point is if he comes in and kills it we can trade him for a lot. The point is if he comes in and doesn't play like he did last year, but plays like a mediocre, bottom 5 starting QB in the league (rather than worse than most #2s) we can get one of the other 4 teams to give something like, oh say a 2nd and a good young CB. I think the precedent has already been set for that situation. Kolb most certainly didn't come in and kill it...

who was #1 on the list?

I could see Jimmy having a good career no doubt. Sure he had a awful rookie season but many great qbs have. I really want to see Cam Newton start because I feel he can do more than Jimmy but what if we can platoon them? Use Newton for certain plays and Jimmy for other plays? I honestly think Jimmy can turn out to be a decent NFL QB but with us drafting Newton do we need him? I say we give Jimmy some playing time so we can show case him for a trade.

Look what the Eagles got for Kolb if Jimmy can have a few good games then maybe we can get some high draft picks for him. He is a lot younger than Kolb so maybe we can get more for him.

Let's hope that Jimmy kills it and is the starter for the entire year. This is the best case scenario. Don't forget that Cam hasn't had any rookie OTAs this year. The more time we can give him the better. However, it will be real funny to hear everyone on the Huddle back track if he does kill it b/c only a handful of people here (I was one) have supported Clausen b/c he didn't have much to work with last year.
