Panthers Camp: The Plot Thickens

I've seen one report that says that and it was a fan just like us...Most Journalist have Cam as being the worst QB in the league this year everyone else is just a fan that is excited to have the number 1 pick in our camp this year regardless if he is actually doing good or not; so no I'm not way off base. Besides these boards are for opinion, I haven't been to a practice since fanfest but based off of what I watched with my own eyes and then reports coming from peope that have been there afterwards...I am completly correct.

I haven't seen any of those articles manybe you can point me to a couple. Unless you counting those sites where many of the writers are fans and have been professing Cam's doom from the day he was drafted.

It's clear that your reading sites that cater to your personal biases.

While you are right, that does not make me correct, you are also wrong that writters have said Cam has been superior. Even RR said Cam just isn't consistant enough and they need to work on his mechanics; last night proved that. So I'm not sure where you get this from beside one Steve Reed tweet and a blog post by a Cam fan.

For what its worth, I'm not biases, I think Cam will be good...real good. Just not this year

I don't think anyone thinks Cam will be real good this year....or even good.

just that he will make us more competitive than Clausen.

There are several, one is even a heading for a thread on the forum

There are many many more like that, you just have to navigate away from the huddle to find them.

Again, some think Cam will bust others just think he isn't ready. I agree with the later and by no means think he has looked as good as some people on here like to think he has

Am I or are you?

Nope, cause I'm not a Panther fan. I am a sports fan. My teams are the Giants and Jets.Yes, the team you play this Saturday is MY team but I will be rooting for you because of Cam and Clausen. I am supporting you because you're the underdog team and you ended up with a kid who the media seems to take great pleasure in undermining because of his success in college. If that makes me bias then I'm bias.

Anyway, I read many of the sports sites and I haven't see any of the writers really saying Cam isn't where most rookies like him should be. Even the more socalled NFL rookies had their growing pains, why not Cam.

Good lord. Bleacher Report does not count as professional analysis.

I love the spin if you say Cam does X, Y, and Z better than Clausen then that means you think Cam Newton is gonna be the most awesome QB ever this year.

Undrafted garbage players last year did lots of things better than Clausen.......

I am 95% sure that Gettis has a torn MCL, and will be out for the season. Just talked to my grandfather-in-law whom is an orthopedic specialist, I told him about Gettis' knee buckling, and he is unable to put any weight on the leg. He said, if you were able to put 'some weight' on the leg and feel pain, it would be partially torn or sprained, but no weight at all is a very bad sign. Hope he's wrong, but I don't think he is.

He deduced that it's the MCL because the knee buckled, and didn't twist when it was injured. Take this with a grain of salt as it's just 1 doctors opinion without examining the patient.

I am glad Cam is experiencing some moments of failure now a couple of weeks into camp. It was inevitable that it would happen at some point this year, and will serve as a good reality check for him as a player and for us as fans. That said, I have little doubt he will overcome his limitations and become the complete package, given some time.

What I don't understand is the few posters on this forum that seem to take joy in his failings. I just don't get it. Maybe you didn't want him in the draft, but is it so important to your self-esteem that you would rather be right at the cost of a major loss for the team's progress? I just don't get it.

    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
    • I didn't say I would have done it. I was just saying that I can see why some in the FO considered it. Everything was done to give Bryce weapons. Solidify the interior line thru FA. Get XL at WR in round 1 and then get the most talented RB in round 2. Take a TE in round 4, etc They were probably "assuming" he'd make a complete recovery during the 2024 season. I'm a skeptical person. I wouldn't have assumed he'd be ok in 2024. I personally would have taken another position in the 2nd for that very reason. But, if I were "influenced" to take him I would've argued to keep him off the field, especially seeing how things were going for us record wise. Conventional Wisdom says most backs don't get back to normal until two years after the ACL surgery. He was injured in Fall 2023. Having him suit up in 2025 would have been almost 2 years since the original injury. You have him for 3 year on low contract. If he balls out, you resign him for a couple of more years b/c he'd only have 3 years of tread on the tires. If he's ok but not great you let him walk.
