Panthers Camp: The Plot Thickens

According to several people, not just huddlers such as Teh Kurb, actually journalists and such, they have almost all said Cam has been superior to Jimmy throughout camp. These same people said that Jimmy was great yesterday and Cam struggled.

So, you are just way off base here.

I've seen one report that says that and it was a fan just like us...Most Journalist have Cam as being the worst QB in the league this year everyone else is just a fan that is excited to have the number 1 pick in our camp this year regardless if he is actually doing good or not; so no I'm not way off base. Besides these boards are for opinion, I haven't been to a practice since fanfest but based off of what I watched with my own eyes and then reports coming from peope that have been there afterwards...I am completly correct.

I don't get all the doom and gloom about Newton. This is to be expected. Newton is going to struggle this year and he is also going to show some flashes. Our fan base just needs to be patient with him.

If he benefits from sitting for a while behind Clausen or DA, then that is what he needs to do. Hopefully, he'll get quite a bit of playing time in the pre-season games coming up. I really think that will be the first big test for him to adjust to the speed of the game.

I'm really looking forward to this season, even if we don't win that many games.

Comparisons are often misplaced, as I have seen Newton aligned with everybody from Jamarcus Russell to Brett Favre. To draw such parallels is simply foolish, as we have yet to see the complete body of work. Not even the first chapter.

I so agree. Don't see why Cam is expected to do more, learn more and achieve more than any of the other rookies of both races, who were just as accomplished as him while they were in college.

Heck the media choosen QBS number one last year, Sam Bradford struggled his rookie season and he was preceived to be pro-ready.

Every local journalist/bear writer that have been to every practice has said that Cam has been superior except for yesterday. So, no you are not "correct". You may still disagree with them, but that does not make you correct, it makes you having an opinion, albeit a biased and misguided one.

The main thing I will be looking for this preseason/season from Cam is flashes of potential

Last year Jimmy showed no flashes whatsoever.

Cam is a rookie QB which guarantees he is going to struggle, plus the lockout has only hindered his development. As long as he shows the potential and improves throughout the season ala Josh Freeman, this season is going to be exciting even if we only manage a handful of wins.

I'm going to take it, since you won't answer the question, that you have NOT actually watched Cam in the shotgun or in any play for that matter.

IMO Cams footwork is terrible undercenter and in the Shotgun; especially under pressure. He panics and sails the ball a lot. Sometimes I wonder if the balls he throws downfield were actually meant to be check downs that he over throws...and no, I'm not being funny, he misses by that much! Cam will be good in time, I like what he is doing but I would not be surprised to see him third on the depth chart come September 11.

Actually, I haven't watched DA, but after listening to some people that went to practice yesterday,...Mad Hatter might be right

in post you quoted of mine on this reply......I answered YES. Yes I have.

Cam's footwork needs work across the board, I don't argue that. He is still better QB right now than Jimmy out of the gun. Jimmy is better under center.

Cam is better under pressure as well. Not by a lot but enough to notice.

the fact you think opening day Cam will likely be #3 shows you aren't watching what is going on. Everyone else like Reed, Gantt, etc......have Cam pegged as the opening day starter.

Which was everything but one read plays? That doesn't sound good

I believe that is why they call what Cam is doing practicing.

Now I guess that's another thing one can obsess over when they go see Cam. He is doing a one read or not...WOW...

Like most NFL QBs didn't have an adjustment period. Even the so called pro-ready ones. Nope, not Cam. He's gonna have to master the NFL right out the box.

While you are right, that does not make me correct, you are also wrong that writters have said Cam has been superior. Even RR said Cam just isn't consistant enough and they need to work on his mechanics; last night proved that. So I'm not sure where you get this from beside one Steve Reed tweet and a blog post by a Cam fan.

For what its worth, I'm not biases, I think Cam will be good...real good. Just not this year

Most of the comments I have seen from professional jounalist have been similar to this.

You don't want to hand everything to Cam Newton right away; and Clausen has been the more consistent player for much of training camp. Ultimately, Newton will be the better player, but he must earn the job

The best and worst of Newton was certainly on display, as he fumbled one ball away and threw several erratic passes that should have been completed, but weren't. But he also had an incredible touch pass to Jeremy Shockey and zipped in a couple of sweet 20-yard passes in traffic.

Doesn't say that Newton has been better, just that he is more talented. And I agree with the author, he has to earn the starting spot with his play. If Clausen gives us a better shot to win now, then he should be playing over Newton.

Reed and Gantt both say Cam starts week 1.
