Anybody ever installed ubuntu?

I'm installing it (v 11.04) on my old laptop and having some issues...

Ubuntu is a linux variant. Supposed to be easy to install and use... and it seems to be... it appears to run fine if I boot from the CD iso, but when I install it to the internal HDD, it will boot but the screens all screwed up and it acts weird and never goes to the desktop???

Sounds like a video card driver issue. I had ubuntu but had so many problems with my wireless card that I said screw it and went back to windows. :confused:

I put ubuntu on my netbook, but I had no problems. Don't know how much I could help.

I think you are right... definitely something screwy going on...too bad too, seems like a cool little OS. Weird though how it will run if booted from the CDROM but not from the HDD install.

Was going to try OpenSUSE but that system won't boot from DVD apparently.

Trying Puppy 5.2.5 now, we'll see... this is really my first foray into linux... I just want something on this laptop for simple web surfing and some office stuff for the kids.

More than likely a driver issue. I can't install ubuntu on my laptop because there are no drivers for some of my hardware.

Thanks... may try that next. I've tried a few, and trying Xubuntu now... not having much luck. They all seem to have some issue with this particular laptop... :(

So I finally got Xubuntu to install and run... I like it. Pretty slick. I also got Puppy to run off of the CD... I really like it but don't really want to boot from the CD.

Any suggestions for applications on xubuntu?
