Panthers Offense Explained....

Clausen may have the 10 yard passes down, but I still can't get over the fact that he can't see over the line and has a low release... 10 yards or 50 yards doesn't do any good if the DT's knock the ball down.

Good read.

Pointless to the Panthers, but this just reminded me of Jimmy's brother, Casey. Casey Clausen was a very successful college QB, but he never had to complete anything more than about a 10 yard pass with the offense he had. Don't know why I never put it together that Jimmy is the exact same QB, just Casey never got a chance to be a bust in the league.

I am not trying to be rude here, but please stop calling the Coryell offense a version of the WCO.

It was the original WCO but it is no longer.

Please call it the Coryell O, or a "version of the Coryell O".

That said, IMO neither Cam nor Jimmy are a good fit in the Coryell O that hopefully Chud will be running.

Cam is not accurate enough, and Jimmy has not shown the patience nor the arm strength needed to run it like Fouts, Aikman, or Rivers.

David Gettis and AC veteran Legudu Naanee ought to serve as excellent mid-range, big-body targets along with Olsen that will help to spread the field and open up coverage.

I think Gettis will be used more in the role of a deep threat with his blazing speed... he may be the fastest straight-line runner we have on the roster right now.

Brady Quinn struggled in Chudzinski's offense in 2008. Clausen's check-downs remind me of him. Tough to succeed in this offense when you can't stretch the field and don't look to do it.

Seems Clausen would succeed if the offense required a QB to be able to make 5 yard checkdown throws and throws over 10 yards that resemble injured ducks and punts.

Good point-- Ideally, Pilares can also eventually turn into another receiver that can be a threat to open it up deep IMO, but he's going to have to make it onto the roster first.

Do you think that Gettis is faster than Armanti? I agree with your comment, just being curious

Gettis ran 4.47 40 and a 6.94 3-cone @ the combine which was actually slower then what I expected to find.

Armanti ran a 4.41 40 @ his pro day and a 6.74 3-cone.

So on both counts Armanti is faster, but he's also much smaller then Gettis. I think Gettis's size and experience playing the WR position give him an advantage over Armanti as a deep field threat.

I think Gettis top gear is faster......I think Edwards can get into his top gear quicker.

Throw some pads on them and see how much more it slows Armanti down.

IIRC, Gettis supposedly ran a 4.3 at his pro day though.

Love it! I grew up a chargers fan and especially a Dan Fouts fan! His exciting deep passes are what got me hooked on football. I love this system and couldn't be more thrilled that our new staff will install it. If cam can run it, fine, if not I know we'll eventually get someone who can and we'll have a high flying circus act of an offense for the next decade. There's nothing better than seeing a 25 yard perfectly timed pass sail into the hands of a wide open receiver as he comes out of his cut! You guys can have Marino. I'll take Fouts any day. He was the Master!!!

Pilares has slot receiver written all over him. He is very Wes Welker-like. I am not sure he would excel as much on the outside. He looks to be a tough minded dude that isn't afraid to go over the middle. He also has the quickness that will cause match up problems.

I am not sure he has that "Go get it" ability that many outside receivers have. Especially sine he lacks height.

Agreed-- He was one of my favorite draft picks this year, and not just because of his name. Usually I'm a little wary of players from Hawaii because their pass-heavy system can really pad the stats of QBs and WRs, but in time I think he can develop into a crafty addition to our offense.

The thing to watch will be making sure we can keep him on the roster... If he winds up being the odd man out and is sent to the practice squad, teams that are shallow at WR might come calling if he keeps showing flashes of promise in camp
