Panthers Offense Explained....

If Clausen gets noticably better protection this year, do you think he'll lose that desire to check down on everything?

Even when he had good protection last year, the end result was a checkdown more often than not.

I just don't see him stepping up to the Air Coryell derivative we're installing. Hopefully I'll eat crow on that.

This is the biggest reason why Cam will eventually get the starting nod over Jimmy, whether it's in week one or week 16. It seems too counter-intuitive to remain with a quarterback who is only comfortable making first-level throws if the intent of the offense is to keep DBs and LBs honest with a mix of deep burners and capable mid-range route-runners.

Chud has been tooling this offense to Cam's strengths since we drafted him, accounting for his ability to scramble and work outside the pocket. Look for some of the wrinkles and intricacies to be different from what is seen in San Diego, but it's not too unreasonable to expect that Cam's YPA will be fairly high among rookies this season, assuming he sees some playing time

I fully expect him to be the start in week one, for starters this is a Gillman-Coryell offense, second thing is that Chud has indeed been adding a lot of wrinkles in because of Cam. I don't think you add option reads, QB runs and so forth while running a Coryell offense and not let Cam start.

I just don't see the thought process behind tailoring an offense for one guy and then playing another one that doesn't have near the physical ability. Only way that Newton isn't the starting QB for game one is if he bombs the preseason, Clausen blows up in preseason to unforseen heights, or some other unforeseen circumstance.

He doesn't have the natural arm strength to run this offense. For Clausen to get power and distance on his deep throws he has to torque his body and it takes a long time for him to release the ball. If you watched him play at ND, when he made deep throws he torqued his body which made his delivery very long and slow. To slow for it to be effective in the NFL. I really don't see him being able to run this offense effectively because of that reason alone, that's not counting his tendency to scramble when not needed, or to throw three quarter when he needs an over head release in the NFL.

The combo of Clausen and this offense is a mixed bag.

Charlie Weis ran an Erhardt-Perkins style system, a Coryell offshoot that shares some common factors with what we'll be running. In that sense, he may have a bit of a leg up on Newton.

But with that said, Clausen's passing skill set is far better suited to a Walsh style WCO (with one exception; he's not as mobile as you'd like in a West Coast QB) so that sort of nullifies the advantage.

The good thing is that Chudzinski seems to be a smart enough coach to understand their differences and play to ech of their strengths. I doubt Davidon could have done that.

Clausen does nto have the arm to throw thsoe 45-50 yard frozen ropes like Cam can.

However, he has plenty of arm strength to be successful in the 20-30 yard passing game.

He needs to trust his arm and reads more.

He also needs to get his throws higher.

Those low trajectory throws just don't cut it, no matter what system you're running.

Hoping Shula can do something about that.

And as a side note, I have to admit I find it very cool to have someone with the Shula name associated with this franchise.

Agree with you 100%.

His lack of prototypical height makes his low trajectory even more of an issue.

is he not still checking down at an absurd rate in camp under Chud?

Cam is throwing bombs all over the field.......

So you think randomly Jimmy is just going to start attempting to go downfield in games despite not being able to attempt it in practice?

I understand he can throw the 10-25 yard pass fairly well when he trust his arm, but in this offense he is going to have to take deep shots down the field. He is going to have to push the ball. Also his 15-30 yard throws will need to have a slight bit more zip on them for the timing routes to be effective and yes they are timing routes. The Coryell offense is very dependent on timing, just like the Walsh WCO is, just in the Coryell offense the break points are deeper.

Edit: I just posted the first Clausen video I saw on YT, please mute if you watch. lol

Clausen has a chance in a WCO where no pass exceeds 10 yards.

the entire point of the WCO is to throw short passes to open up the deep ball.. he's still going to fail in that system if he can't take advantage of the defense as soon as a deep route is open..

Makes sense, but still...at some point you HAVE to ask your QB to do more. I think Pickles is in a good situation here. The Panthers made Newton the number one pick, yes, but they didn't give him Bradford money. Starting out in training camp, the physical aspects of each player stand out more and fans will want Newton. But as more plays are added and the offense gets more complicated, I see Claussen stepping forward and leaving Newton behind. Jon Kitna put up huge numbers in a Martz offense, so don't tell me Claussen can't shine, too.

i personally like jimmy, so i'm not knocking him per se. it's more about the way they were taught to play the game, jimmy plays the high % safe throws where cam looks to make big plays down the field. this offense seems to fit cam better but doesn't mean clausen can't have success in it

Yep. Even a Walsh style WCO still uses the deep ball. Watch the Eagles offense and you'll see a fair share of deep passes.

Andy Reid simply isn't running a real Walsh WCO right now....not w/ Vick on the field.

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
