Panthers Offense Explained....

depsite being not being able to make the throws required to run it?

Newton already seems to have much firmer grasp on the type throws needed to run the offense than Clausen. Then again, they both might know what needs to be done but Cam's height and arm allow him to do it.

Clausen's ain't gonna grow any taller nor is his motion likely to change nor is is arm strength likely to change......I just don't see how what Clausen shows would lead anyone to believe he would shine in anything but a Walsh system.

If the coaches can teach Cam to check the ball down when he should, he will be very good.

Right now.....JC checks everything down....Cam checks nothing down.

If we could combine the two into one mega QB, we would be set.

I agree.....I also think it is easier to control a downfield passer making him checkdown than it is to do the reverse. Cam will learn as a big reason he likely doesn't checkdown is his running ability/atheticism was always his "safety" option.

I just think w/ Cam's size it allows him to see so much more potential downfield than Clausen. Due to Clausen's size and motion.....I think he knows a lot of potential plays he simply can't make while in the pocket and therefore he just is not going to even try.

Oh, I completely agree with you. I think that Cam's upside is tremendous and JC's is marginal.

There will be growing pains with Cam. But, he seems to be like a sponge. I am sure that he will get it about checking down. Otherwise, he will be a turnover machine (pushing the envelope too often). If that happens, rivera may sit him.

Big thanks to David for writing the article! Please leave comments under the article itself...

Or you could have just posted the Huddle thread on what type of O we would run there.

Don't forget folks, Phillip Rivers sat 2 years behind Brees before seeing the field, Jimmy or Cam aren't going to come out and run this flawlessly, it'll be a work in progress.

Yes rivers had tons of yards last year but its not all because of the offense. Due to their inept ST they were always coming from behind having to leave the running game behind and pass it almost 70% of the time.

The article is talking about yards per pass attempt or "pushing the ball down the field", which Rivers as lead the league in since his second season starting.

I agree with you but seeing guys like Brees throw for 4500 yards every year kind of kills the size issue.

Jimmy's ball comes out much lower than Brees'.......so size isn't just about height. Jimmy plays smaller than he is.

Also, I think Brees is the classic example of an exception to the norm. Guys like that are already in a hole in this league......Jimmy compounds that with his quirky throwing motion.

This is the biggest reason why Cam will eventually get the starting nod over Jimmy, whether it's in week one or week 16. It seems too counter-intuitive to remain with a quarterback who is only comfortable making first-level throws if the intent of the offense is to keep DBs and LBs honest with a mix of deep burners and capable mid-range route-runners.

Chud has been tooling this offense to Cam's strengths since we drafted him, accounting for his ability to scramble and work outside the pocket. Look for some of the wrinkles and intricacies to be different from what is seen in San Diego, but it's not too unreasonable to expect that Cam's YPA will be fairly high among rookies this season, assuming he sees some playing time

If Clausen gets noticably better protection this year, do you think he'll lose that desire to check down on everything?
