Panthers Offense Explained....

Once the game slows down and he's more fundamentally sound he'll kill it.

That's just it. This is a very complicated offense (at least it was under Martz and Coryell). It may never slow down for Newton. But Pickles ran a complicated offense at Notre Dame and I think he'll shine in this one. Just my opinion.

the offense is complicated for everybody, wr's,te's & rb are required to do more than they have in the past. chud is not going to ask newton or clausen to run something they can't IMO but clausen has to challenge teams down the field to make this offense work

Yes I agree, it may take some time, but he has the talent to go above and beyond here.

With Smith as a deep threat, shcokey and olsen over the middle and two great backs going out to the flats he will always have a check down some where. Add in the speed of Gettis and Edwards, he has a lot of help imo.

It really just does come down to the game slowing down for him.

This offense is no more complex than Walsh's WCO or the Erhardt-Perkins. It's just different. It relies more on timing, and precise patterns. QBs do more throwing to spots where they trust the receiver will be.

Clausen should do better in this one because it places more of a premium on protecting the QB, so you won't see as much happy feet (hopefully), and there are fewer after-snap decisions. Most of the misdirection and confusion comes before the snap. It also makes more use of the RB as an actual target, rather than an outlet, and sets up plays for that to happen. That alone should help Clausen a ton.

Here's hoping he keeps the seat nice and warm for Cam, and makes a few GMs around the league consider him as the next Kevin Kolb.

Makes sense, but still...at some point you HAVE to ask your QB to do more. I think Pickles is in a good situation here. The Panthers made Newton the number one pick, yes, but they didn't give him Bradford money. Starting out in training camp, the physical aspects of each player stand out more and fans will want Newton. But as more plays are added and the offense gets more complicated, I see Claussen stepping forward and leaving Newton behind. Jon Kitna put up huge numbers in a Martz offense, so don't tell me Claussen can't shine, too.

It would be great if he had some great games and we could get anywhere near what the eagles got for Kolb.

I respect that, I just can't see it. Despite running a complex O at ND I was never impressed with JC and didn't want to draft him. His skill set just isn't cut out for a vertical passing offense.

depsite being not being able to make the throws required to run it?

Newton already seems to have much firmer grasp on the type throws needed to run the offense than Clausen. Then again, they both might know what needs to be done but Cam's height and arm allow him to do it.

Clausen's ain't gonna grow any taller nor is his motion likely to change nor is is arm strength likely to change......I just don't see how what Clausen shows would lead anyone to believe he would shine in anything but a Walsh system.

Who's David?

Personally I thought Mr. Scot's explanation a couple months back was better and more detailed, but this should be informative for those at the 101 level.

That's me. Long-time reader, occasional poster (especially with this handle). It is a pretty elementary breakdown, but from reading everyone's posts the last few weeks about the WCO, that's honestly just what some people need.

I thought it was an accurate break down, guess I was just hoping for something a bit more advanced.

I'll certainly rep for your work though.
