Panthers need to re-sign Hurney

Honestly, I want Hurney back but I'm not so sure of his value if the CBA is not worked out. Hurney's greatest asset is his ability to manage contracts and the salary cap jointly. The actual contract negociations are not done by him and I don't believe that he is a great evaluator of talent, he has put people in place to do that for him. If you take away the salary cap is he that great of a GM? I think Hurney is a lot like Polian in that there job is less of a GM and more of a cap manager that oversees the football operations.

I like the thinking behind this Mountain. In my opinion the talent evaluator and the money guy should not be one in the same. Unfortunately the money guy is ALWAYS the one to veto what another employee discovers no matter how solid the opinion is.

The guy that writes the checks holds the keys to the city. There is an outside chance that he locked us up on purpose to stand pat (outside of a few changes) and hope a few breaks fall our way next year instead of getting too wild and risking the loss of what was working in 2008... but even that seems too silly.

Personally I can find NO logic ion what Hurney is doing with what he has bee dealt this off season and I believe his decisions thus far are based on impulse.

Resign Hurney ??

Yeah he has done a great job so far with Peppers and Delhomme.

There is so much Panthers news this off season I can hardly keep up.

I'm seriously one more dumbass comment away from going postal on this message board, there have been so many blooming idiots like the poster that I have quoted above that I really am getting tired of it, I know Squirrel joked about a mandatory IQ test being required to post on this Message Board but I am starting to believe that one is gravely needed.:mad2:

What would you have done differently?

Any answer that contains any version of "I'm not the GM" is unacceptable.

No argument is valid unless you can back it up.

So, WWCRD??

CRW let Peppers walk, tag Gross for one more year instead of locking him up, focus on defensive linemen and a corner in FA and draft a big OLT in round 2 if you could do work on the defense prior to draft day with the cap room.

But letting Peppers walk would surely get you fired as a GM, the whole city would be ready to crucify you.

I'm not saying it isn't a viable strategy, but what would you say at the press conference announcing Peppers is gone with zero compensation?

"We appreciate all the hard work an dedication from Julius. We understand he wants to explore other options. In losing such a valuable player on our roster who has expressed an interest in leaving we feel that we need to get to work immediately and focus on how we can make our team better in 2009 without having to hold Julius or the Carolina Panthers hostage while opportunities for both parties are presenting themselves."

The compensation comes in doing your job and finding the right pieces to play for the Panthers who WANT to play for the Panthers.

Aaah, I see your POV now. You make a fair argument.

I think we will all have a lightbulb moment when whatever Hurney has up his sleeve happens. I think he made quite a statement by tagging peppers and I seriously doubt that he would have knowingly handcuffed the team by doing so.

Obviously I hope I'm right, we'll find out soon enough (for me anyways, some people need news NOW!!!!OMGZ!!!)
