Panthers need to re-sign Hurney

he can't

and why are you asking me?

Hurney is the one who thinks he has control over this somehow. Whatever he thought about the situation, he made a POOOOOOR decision to tag him.

The potential for failure far outweighed the LEGITIMATE possibility for success. Tagging Pep was not a measured risk and Hurney was given ALL the signs that there was a strong likelihood for this to go bad, including the "4 team" remarks made earlier in that week by the peppers camp.

That remark alone whether true or not should have told anybody that this was going to go South and something was going to happen to benefit Pep LONG before anything that could benefit the Panthers was going to happen.

..but braindead Hurney ignored the obvious and still hoped for the motherload

Means nothing if they actually -wanted- to keep him. Then they got what they wanted. An All-Pro DE with all the physical tools to remain a cog in a slowly deteriorating line(and take a couple plays off) and not be forced to address DE in the draft when there are clearly other needs such as DT, CB, LB, OG, OT, and supposedly QB.

Hurney thinks he has "control" because Peppers can't afford to sit out a season and they actually WANT him there, which is why they didn't give him the non-exclusive tag which would allow them to negotiate any trade. Think of ANY time where a player has sat out a season and was sought out for the next. No one wants a player with character issues, not even the cowboys anymore.

some fans/owners/GMs/coaches want players on the team that WANT to be on the team and are not forced to play just good enough to get a ticket out the following year.

wtf are you asking for here? If you think this will actually work you are definitely in the mindset of tagging him again next year.

---dumb...sorry but it just is

Ehhh...I think a lot of what is said publicly on both sides at this point is posturing. We'll have to see.

Then Peppers better keep looking for that team that really wants him, because all this is showing him is that no one wants a nearly 30 freak of nature athlete who sometimes takes plays off and doesn't give his 100% all the time. No one is willing to give us 2 first rounds for it, and honestly Peppers is too modest to try to go out and get 2 first rounds for it. No one wants him, no one is showing interest in him.

He's not forced to play with us soley because we tagged him, he's forced to play with us next season because no one else wants him. No one wants to pay the price.

I agree, we'll see.

And of course its posturing, it always is. I just pointed out the one thing that sealed it decision wise. To me there was never a doubt to let him walk.

Sure. The idea of getting a first round pick this year sounds great but in reality it is just too far-fetched. Another reality is that even if it did happen it is gonna be late in the off season. After doing such a good job last off season of picking and popping the vets and FA's for our roster it really surprised me that they would make a move that put all their moves in one basket, a basket held by Julius Peppers.

It's almost inconceivable to me that greed and a fence-swinging mentality could make someone look as stupid a Marty Hurney looks right now.

I AGREEE !!!

So why did we tag him?????

you are being very naive if yiou think we can force a player to do anything and youare being even more naive than that if youthink any play we get out of peppers this season will be overall beneficial to our team.

Who can he mentor? Who will oook up to him. What will the perception of him in the locker room be?

the guy wants out and huurney handcuffs him to the water cooler and in turn handcuffs the ENTIRE organization this off season.

Why?

For what?

the WAAAAAY outside chance of a first round draft choice?

LOLAMH

Your entire argument is based solely on the fact that Hurney is planning to trade Peppers. If /he/ is trying to trade peppers, he wouldn't have given Peppers the tag which allows him to find a suitor. Peppers wants to be traded, but now the only way to trade him is if he finds a team that's willing to give up 2 firsts for him, which in this age, will not happen.

If Hurney plans on keeping Peppers, he wins. If Peppers finds someone else... He wins. Tell me what part of that is stupid. Is it the drama that espn portrays it as? Does it make you cry?

Because if we didn't, he'd walk. He turned down a huge deal. We would get no compensation for him. No one is willing to give up 2 firsts, but people will sure as hell throw bottom loaded contracts at him like the Redskins did with Haynesworth.

I recall 2-4 weeks ago, when the subject of the possibility of Peppers walking with NO compensation, everyone said it would be the worse decision ever made by Hurney. Now that he's doing what he's suppose to be doing, yall are still bitching.

There just is no good the man can do.

I don't think they will get a first for him either. HOWEVER......I am also not sure that's what Hurney is thinking. Yes he publicly stated that if someone wants Pep, they need to come up with 2 first rounders. But to actually EXPECT that a team will do that is irrational. He is merely regurgitating what it takes under the tag to get Pep. I am pretty sure that he wouldn't say no to talking to any team that Pep and his agent funneled to him. Saying no right away without any dialog, THAT would be monumentally stupid.

Honestly, I want Hurney back but I'm not so sure of his value if the CBA is not worked out. Hurney's greatest asset is his ability to manage contracts and the salary cap jointly. The actual contract negociations are not done by him and I don't believe that he is a great evaluator of talent, he has put people in place to do that for him. If you take away the salary cap is he that great of a GM? I think Hurney is a lot like Polian in that there job is less of a GM and more of a cap manager that oversees the football operations.
