Rivera releases first Depth Chart

Goodie was like the closest Panther to ever scoring a PR since Rod Smart.

There were countless times where Goodie put last years anemic offense at the 30+ yard line.

Don't fix what's not broken.

Didn't Mark Jones come close on a couple in 2008? Seems like I remember him breaking through on a couple but he just kind of ran out of gas.

Our special teams were pretty good that year.

Jones had the vision......Jones didn't have the speed to break one. Jones set himself up to return a couple......but he just didn't have the speed to take it the distance (would always get caught despite the field setting up for him).

Goodson really seemed to "get it" last year. For the first time since Smitty I realistically thought we had chances at scoring on KOs.

--Rivera emphasized the depth chart released by the team Tuesday, which listed Jimmy Clausen ahead of Cam Newton at quarterback, was an unofficial version.

Rivera said coaches are still formulating rotations at all positions for Saturday's preseason opener against the New York Giants. The Panthers will be mindful about trying to protect the quarterbacks.

“The one thing you don't want to do is expose any of our quarterbacks to a situation where they're in there with a bunch of young offensive linemen,” he said.

I fully expected Jimmy to be the #1 QB during the preseason. I think the main reason is because Clausen has seniority. Also, this gives Newton more reason to compete. Number 1 on the depth chart doesn't mean he's named him the starter.

But come the regular season, it's no more deferring to the 2nd year player and the best man will win the job. (aka Cam)
