Thomas Davis' golf whip vs J-stew's scooter

I played college ball with a few guys who were all pro a year or two and they signed lucrative second contracts. One guy was a DE for the Eagles. THe story was that when WCU recruited him, he had no floors in the house. You stepped down into the crawl space where they had plastic sheets with carpets on top of them. He signed a cotract (around 1990 or so) for a million per year for 3-4 years. I was so happy for him. Can you imagine?

Clyde Simmons?

Clyde Simmons?

I didnt want to say, but that was the story that an assistant coach told me. (In fact, that assistant coach was a grad assistant who later became the head coach-Briggs). Clyde was rather quiet, and was not even our best defensive player. We had Louis Cooper who was drafted by the Seahawks and played for the Chiefs mostly, and Tiger Greene, who played SS for the Packers. In college, they got most of the attention. We also had Dean Biasucci, the all time leading scorer for the Colts.

Clyde was about 6'6" and weighed about 235 when he came in. In Philly, he was about 270 if my memory serves me. Playing opposite Reggie White with players like Seth Joyner on the team was deja vu.

When I saw on the news that he became rich, it made me happy for him.

Well that blows holes in the story I was told because the coach told me he lived in the swamps of SC. Dang. he probably lived in a split level with a three car garage. I knew Clyde a little but we were not at all close. He was a nice guy, kinda quiet. I was friends with Biasucci and cooper. Greene scared me.

Better go ahead and get the Jaws of Life ready--they will need them to get him out of it even if he doesn't wreck it.

Man, I can imagine what it is like to grow up dirt poor and then suddenly have at least 30 million.
