Panthers latest camp analysis....

I think it's entirley possible we keep 7 WRs.

As i said the other day....With one Kicker and Barnidge possibly taking over as LS, I believe WR is the position we are trying to free up.

Smitty

Gettis

Lafell

Armanti

Nanee

Those guys are all locks. That right there is already 5, and there is no special teams ace among the group.

I think Clowney will be one of the tough cuts, and you will see a couple of Wallace Wright type guys take the last two spots.

It's a given we have at least 6 this year, I am just suggesting that even 7 is possible.

Our WR position will be interesting to watch in the preseason. Should be some good line ups to battle for that #2 spot.

I think we should keep 6 WR's, maybe keep 1 on special teams. Should be the obvious Smith/Gettis/Lafell/Naanee, and we are keeping AE around for sure.

Clowney, Wright, Martin, Guy, Pilares all have to fight for roster spots. And you add in Adams from UDFA. In total we have like 11 WR's for camp, with 6 of them competing for roster spots.

I will predict that it comes down to keeping Clowney or Pilares. If we keep Clowney, Pilares can go to practice squad hopefully. If we keep Pilares, I say put Darvin Adams on PS and release Clowney.

Let the battles begin!

53 man roster still in effect. the only changes to roster size has to do with the game day roster which grew from 45-46 and eliminated the emergency QB.

really not anything that helps us keep more WRs.

it's going to be tough.

I agree with the sentiment that we will roll with 6 WR's. With our combination of youth and question marks as to what value we truly have at wideout, going with 5 would be way to Foxish in manner. Plus, Chud's system is so open that I think by default you almost have to go with 6. I feel like whenever I caught SD games in the past, that so many different receivers caught passes from Rivers, that there had to be more than 5 on their sideline for gameday.

Seems to me that since roster spots haven't went to 56, if we keep 6-7 wrs we'd have to cut somewhere else. I dout we cut hartstock or whatever at TE so that might mean barney is gone. Another possiblity(that i think would be wrong) would be losing another RB. Sutton has been as good as the other backs in training camp.

would hate to lose one of those 2 players Just to keep clowney or pilares.

I think there is a higher probability that we keep 6 WR's than the article indicates. I assume we try to put Pilares on the practice squad? I hope nobody scoops him up.

I think we keep six, but there is always the PUP and IR. I do not want Clowney. I saw him drop 4 balls at Fanfest. He has had time to develop and is still fighting for a roster spot. He is peaking and Pilares is still learning to play WR and they are even.

We are talking about the fifth or sixth WR on the team. Keep the potential.

just looked at the 2007 browns 53 man roster and saw that they went with 5 WRs, 3 RBs, 3 TEs, 2 FBs...total of 13 spots for these 4 positions.

chargers went into last year with the same.

i hate to say it, but we might be going with a similar number of each. we may end up losing a few favorites around here.

5 WRs: smith, gettis, lafell, naanee, edwards (not in order)

3 TEs: olsen, shockey, hartsock (very valuable blocking TE...won't be cut)

3 RB: williams, stewart, goodson

1 FB: fiammetta

12 slots filled

we have one more slot to fill but barnidge and sutton are left hanging. i think barney is more valuable long term as a receiver. sutton is just a stout runner who can play several roles on the team, including FB. i can see us keeping those two around, but cutting fiammetta.

maybe cut fiammetta and have hartsock and sutton play FB and keep barnidge at TE?

Sutton plays hard and is a nice fill in but,in no shape or form do i want him starting FB. I haven't seen much from hartsock and question really how valuable he is. Its hard to imagine sutton and barnidge being cut.

This is how I would do it:

TE: Olsen, Shockey, Barnidge, Hartsock

FB: Fiametta

RB: Williams, Stewart, Goodson, Sutton

OT: Gross, Otah, Ziemba (if Otah goes down, move Wharton out and Schwartz or Bernadeau to his spot, unless they like Ziemba at LT)

OG: Wharton, Bernadeau, Schwartz

OC: Kalil (Keep Pugh on the PS in the event of an injury; Bernadeau can play backup C on the active roster)

QB: Newton, Clausen, Anderson

WR: Smith, Naanee, Gettis, Lafell, Edwards, Pilares

(25 roster spots)

Note: Edwards, Naanee, Pilares, and possibly Gettis can justify their positions on STs.

Going into a game with 7 linemen is thin, but the depth is very versatile. Schwartz can play 3 spots on the OL (RT, RG, LG), Bernadeau can play three (LG, C, RG), Ziemba could play 3 (ROT, RG, possibly LT with TE help). Bernadeau is looking like the starter, but if Kalil goes down, he moves to C and Schwartz to G. It can be done if you have some depth on the PS. Ryan Pugh is probably that depth (considering Z. Williams is on IR).

Inactives right now would probaby be Sutton, Barnidge, Pilares. That gives us 22 active offensive players on the 46 man active roster.

That gives us 21 active defensive players.

S: Godfrey, Martin, Pugh, Payne(?)

CB: Munnerlyn, Gamble, Cletis Gordon, Burney, (Hogan on PUP or IR; Stanford to PS)

LB: Davis, Beason, Anderson, Connor, Senn, Gaither, Wilson (Williams on PUP)

DT: (as of right now) Neblett, Fua, McClain, Irvin, +free agent large body (Edwards on PUP or IR)

DE: Hardy, Brown, Johnson, Norwood

(25 Roster spots)

Inactives: Payne, Burney, Wilson, Neblett (if we get a free agent nt)

Did I miss someone?

Nice, my only change would be to take sutton off the inactive and add pilares in his place. still young and learning to play the game. Sutton can play a number of diffrent positions and is useful also on special teams.
