Saints vs. Panthers, January 2005. 2004 Season flashback

Saint J

The last and only time the Saints and Panthers played with both sides aiming for a playoff berth was 2005. A resurgent Panthers team that had started off miserably with it's top few RBs and Steve Smith injured rolled in ripping off 6 straight or so behind the arm of Jake Delhomme and the gritty rushing of Nick J. Goings. The Saints had won their last three games putting them at a 7-8 record hoping for 8-8 and a shot at the playoffs. The Saints had a miserable drought in the middle of the season but had turned it around in the end with wins over Tampa, Dallas, and Atlanta to put them back in the playoff picture.

It was a hard fought intense game with both sides drawing penalties for after the play shenanigans. The Saints brought their hard hats and ripped off 164 yards on the ground off the back of the dependable Deuce McAllister. Delhomme in turned tore the Saints miserable secondary to shreds to the tune of 307 yards and two TDs but was sacked a whopping six times. Darren Howard, Will Smith, and Charles Grant each had 1.5+ sacks.

The Saints held a 21-10 lead into the 4th quarter until the Panthers struck back on a Jake Delhomme to Mushin Mohammed TD pass. The Saints would narrowly hold on to the lead as John Kasey missed an inprobable 60+ yard FG attempt as time expired.

The Saints won but depended on the leg of the New York Jet's Doug Brien to get in the playoffs. He missed in the Edward Jones Dome and the Saints watched as Jeff Wilkins put the Rams ahead for the win and playoff berth.

2008 season

After beating the Saints 30-7 earlier that October, the Panthers traveled to the Superdome to take on the taints and get a bye in the playoffs. Drew Brees was after that elusive passing yard record set by Dan Marino back in 1984.

Carolina would get the early first quarter lead as kicker John Kasay got a 45-yard and a 26-yard field goal. The Saints would respond in the second quarter with kicker Garrett Hartley's 21-yard field goal. Afterwards, the Panthers would get a big lead as Kasay made a 34-yard field goal, quarterback Jake Delhomme completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, and cornerback Dante Wesley returning a fumble 12 yards for a touchdown. New Orleans would end the half with quarterback Drew Brees completing a 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marques Colston.

In the third quarter, Carolina would add on to their lead with rookie running back Jonathan Stewart's 2-yard touchdown run. However, in the fourth quarter, the Saints rallied to take the lead as Brees completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Robert Meachem, along with a 9-yard and a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Lance Moore.

However, poo would go down as the Jake Delhomme threw into double coverage, yet steve smith would make a very clutch catch, beating two dumbass defenders. John Kasay would kick a game winning field goal, then, douchebag fox would deny Brees of the aforementioned record
