All of Cam Newtons plays at FanFest (video)

For those of you saying that Clausen looks better need to understand that Cam really opens up this offense so that it can run properly. Clausen does not have the confidence/tools to be in this offense. That stick throw to Barnidge in stride for a TD was a thing of beauty.. Clausen would struggle mightily to even attempt that throw.

Cam allows the coaches to open up the playbook, extend the field, stretch the defense, get 8 and 9 men out of the box which will really open up the run game.

Clausen can not make these throws so the defense will inch up to the line, play shallow zones, and our offense will look like poo, (just like last season) because they do not respect the pass game. After a while, the defense catches on and realizes that they don't have to worry about Clausen going deep on them, so they will be playing single coverage and single deep safety concepts.

Clausen did have better accuracy on the short routes, and maybe better decision making, but in the grand scheme, that will not win us ballgames.. the running game with Cam in the game will win us ballgames.

Neither will interceptions, and trust me, Cam will throw a lot of them with his current foot work and he sails the ball terribly. One good pass out of 5 is about what he is averaging on passes over 30 yards. Granted that is more than Jimmy though.

30+ yard throws are a very small percentage of passing plays and wouldn't judge any quarterback on that stat. But is think he is hitting more like 2/5 on those throws.

I have been following each practice, and by my count, Cam throws the same amount of INTs as TDs, which seems to be on par with successful rookie QBs, ie. Peyton Manning, Sam Bradford, etc.

Bottom line, Jimmy is still playing not to lose, and Cam is playing to win. So I will take those 20 INTs per season if it gets us 20 TDs as well.

Talking points. Jimmy's throw to Olson in the end zone into double coverage was playing to win even though no one seems to want to credit him for it. That's the most recent sample we have from the kid.

Let's see how the preseason goes. I'm not expecting miracles from Jimmy but I am expecting improvement. It's Cam's job so it's important to put these threads in context.

Cam appears to have trouble picking up obvious blitzes from under center in that first video. Definitely can throw a missile and may need a lil more work on touch passes, but all and all his throws seem there. Need to be able to change protections at the LOS.

I noticed the problems with blitzing as well with Cam, but I also noticed they only blitzed Jimmy 2 times in that whole video.. they are clearly trying to help Jimmy's confidence. Cam is being worked like the starter whether people realize that yet or not. He is getting the heavy blitzes and he is getting the big boy's offensive playcalling, whereas Jimmy is getting the dink and dunk edition of the playbook..

Also, I just saw this on twitter, it's the stats of both QBs from the combined last 2 practices.

Clausen: 17/26 (67%), 204 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT (84.7 QB rating)

Newton: 14/33 (49.5%), 274 yards, 6 TD, 0 INT (112.3 QB rating)

Twitter QB ratings from practice?

We have hit a new low.

I think Cam looked better in those videos. Jimmy looked like the same guy from last year. Last season Jimmy made some good throws. He made a few long throws, but mostly checkdowns. The problem is like others have said, those checkdowns turn into batted balls or INTs once the defense shuts the close yardage off. I'm still holding out hope that Jimmy turns into a good starting NFL caliber Qb, but I don't see the improvement yet. Cam is playing like you expect a Qb in this offense to play. Take shots down the field. I rather him risk getting picked off at the opponents 10 yard line than on our 30 or 40 yard line. I don't expect Cam to look like a seasoned vet before the season even starts, but he's doing better than I expected him to be doing at this point.

As far as the blitzing goes, he needs to do better at recognizing it, but that comes with experience. It's going to be a minute before you see him changing up plays and poo, but I don't think it's going to be that long. He's going to get sacked like every other QB. I also give a little credit to the defense for the execution.

I saw that too, Cam was throwing a different set of plays. The coaches were trying to find his progress level and see what to work on. That's why they threw a bunch of blitzes at him. You would expect Cam to look better on deep throws as he has more time to pick up the receiver's route than on quick crossing routes. Also, the limited amount of practice so far hasn't let him get in synch with the receivers. The game will slow down for him over the next few weeks with the more reps. Looks like they are going to stretch the field to take advantage of Cam's arm and mobility.

OL comments: Looks like they swapped out the OLs later in the video. Looked like the 2nd center was floating the snap to the QB in shotgun formation. The #60 center was shooting the ball back to the QB really quick. Not used to seeing slow, fluffy snaps. It was good to see Ziemba pass blocking on the right side of the line as he spent his whole college career at LT. Looks like we picked up a solid OL who can really pass block.
