TE Analysis

Ok, so after hearing some good things today from camp reporters on the TE's, and still hearing skepticism over our WR situation, I thought I would do a small analysis of our TE's and how they are going to be a huge part of our offense.

It is a bit of read, but I enjoyed writing it up.

Here are our current tight ends (most notable):

Greg Olsen:

Former Bears TE. Age 26, 5th season.

Career stats: 194 catches 1,981 yards 20 TD's

Good Article

Olsen didn't play to his potential in Chicago last year. Olsen was in a system that didn't utilize him that much, i.e. the Mike Martz system. But he has shown that he is a receiving threat.

Jeremy Shockey:

Seasoned vet. Age 30, 10th season.

Career Stats: 510 catches 5,688 yards 33 TD's

Shockey is a successful TE that has put up impressive stats nearly every year. He was over 500 yards receiving in all but 2 of 9 seasons, and caught at least 2 TD's in every season but 1. He has also never dipped below 40 catches in a season.

Gary Barnidge:

3 year veteran. Age 25, 4th season.

Career Stats: 12 catches 242 yards 0 TD's

Barnidge was a 5th round pick in 2008. He doesn't have much experience starting games, in fact he has started only 6 in 3 years. But he does have game experience, and still shows potential in being a receiving threat.

So that is what the Panthers are working with. Most notably, the offensive coordinator, Rob Chudzinski.

Good Article

Chudzinski was a TE coach for the Browns and Chargers, as well as at the University of Miami, where he coached TE's Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, and Kellen Winslow.

Chud has had success with TE's. He has coached both Antonio Gates with the Chargers, and Kellen Winslow with the Browns.

In his 05-06 seasons with the Chargers, Antonio Gates went to 2 pro bowls after putting up 160 catches, 2025 yards, and 19 TD's. When Chud came back in 09, Gates put up his only other 1000 yard season.

As the Brown's OC in 2007, Kellen Winslow put up 82 catches for 1106 yards and 5 TD's.

Quote from article (above):

As the Chargers' tight ends and assistant head coach in 2010, Chudzinski helped San Diego rank first in the NFL in total offense with an average of 395.6 yards per game and second in scoring with an average of 27.6 points per game.

Last year, Gates had 50 catches, 782 yards, 10 TD's. He started 10 games.

So, with all this information, you can begin to realize how effective Chud's system and coaching could be for us. Shockey is reunited with his former TE coach from Miami. Olsen is now in a system that will maximize his potential. Barnidge, who has shown promise as a receiver, will have the best opportunity of his career. And they all have a OC and coach who has worked with pro bowl TE's, and used the position to put up big numbers for the offense.

And, this helps our WR's as well. TE's spreading the field opens up Smitty, and gives the other receivers the opportunity to catch the ball. Our passing game no longer has to rely entirely on 1 proven WR and a bunch of rookies.

So there you have it. If this stuff doesn't excite you, then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm thinking they use Hartsock as #3 TE and #2 FB and save a roster spot.

Compared to Barnidge though they are just different TEs.

Hartsock is a pure blocker and rarely used in the passing game, though he's extremely effective at what he does well.

Barnidge is looked at more as a receiving TE and will never be a punishing road grader type.

BTW, guess who had more receptions last season?

I think you are probably correct. Gives them the second FB. Barnidge is a great pass catching TE....but will lose out to Shockey and Olsen.

Would hate to lose him as I believe Shockey won't be here longer than a season or maybe two.
