neither toby mcguire nor christian bale were big names before they starred as spider-man/batman, and both are above average actors

christian bale being arguably a phenomenal actor

agreed, both were recognizable though. the benefit comes from the alter-ego (regular guy) being identified with the actor but not the hero himself.

The Hero has to be the hero and no-one else. Otherwise it fails. Parker can be tobey mcguire, but spiderman can't be.

patrick stewart is patrick stewart and prof X isn't a real character in the films, just an embedded plotline. Ian Mckellan isn't a well enough known actor to have an affect. Outside of star trek, same could be argued for stewart.

besides the fact that both of those characters aren't part of the american mythology. Spiderman/batman/superman are on an entirely different level societally than profX or magneto.

michael keaton as batman

val kilmer as batman

lol george clooney as batman

val wasn't so bad, i actually think he was the best overall of the 3

danny devito as the penguin, and good lord i never liked jack nicholson as the joker, but everyone went apeshit over it

jim carey was ok as the riddler, and the only reason tommy lee jones failed as two face was because of the script

so...

i loved tommy lee jones as two-face. what part of my point are you trying to disprove?

stars without masks don't work?

well for one, i can't name a big ticket actor that i could see portraying superman but would clark kent be any easier?

and even so, they can't just go making steve rogers a ginger or bruce wayne a persian

the thing that makes superman so tough is unlike parker or bruce wayne is he has remained as unchanged as possible, and still looks basically the same now as he did in the 50s, whereas different artists have lended different looks to other alter egos

superman is not allowed to be touched, and as such, demands a specific look

and finding any good actor with an amazing physique like superman is no easy task

right. it has to be superman. especially because he doesn't have a mask.

it can't be george clooney dressed as superman. that would be ridiculous. george clooney can dress as batman because as long as he has the cowl up and shuts the f*ck up you forget it's george clooney. Superman doesn't have that advantage which is why they cast no-name actors without audience baggage to play supes.

We're saying the same thing.

even then i would absolutely reject clooney as clark kent, just like i did as bruce wayne. i hated michael keaton as bruce wayne, thought he did ok as batman. i'm one of the few people that only likes batman returns out of that franchise era though

michael bay could make a superman movie and make him an eskimo and millions of people would still go see it

only people like you and i would really give a fug

i still haven't seen the batman with clooney, arnold and uma thurman

i'm not suggesting clooney play superman. but your comment is even more to my point.

the clooney batman is truly one of the great disasters of cinema. it really is worth watching once.

I'd have to strongly disagree. Bale has been doing big movies since he was like 13...but you're pretty much right about Toby McGuire

he's been doing movies since he was a kid...but does anyone actually recognize him as the kid from Empire of the Sun? Or Newsies?

he had a cult following from The Machinist and American Psycho, but that didn't make him a big name actor, just a legitimate one

i personally liked him in All the Little Animals

a small portion of fans were thrilled about him in batman begins, but everyone else was like...

who?

myself i was like...

american psycho as batman/bruce wayne? i dunno about that wtf

glad i was wrong

    • Super raw, not sure he is worth a top 10 pick.  Primary a pass rusher.  A bit like Burns, very fast athletic but doesnt always follow the play.  His highlights look good but when you watch him play you can see he is just raw and needs to develop
    • Personally, I am not sold on Bryce yet--and I do not think anyone is saying they are, but I don't think Ward is on table when we draft anyway.  Not even sure if I would rather have him than one of the later QBs.  I see a lot of potential in Allar, Nussmeire, Rourke, and even Hamilton from Ohio State--Milroe is intriguing, but I am not sure he is an NFL QB.  Ewers is that sleeper who falls and becomes a solid starter. I think that we sign a veteran who has played and we draft one of these project QBs. To your point:  With that in mind, I think you have to take QB off the table in round 1, and if Bryce can string 4-5 games like KC together, we still need to draft a QB in round three or so---I really think Rourke is a great fit for this offense--he is accurate and gets the ball out quickly---he impressed me vs OSU.   Reason?  I think we may have a tough decision to make about Bryce in 2 years--will he be worth $60m?  That decision is a lot easier if you have been grooming a backup for 2 years who can play. In round 1: I am hoping for PSU's edge Abdul Carter In round 2:  I would like to see us grab a DT who can rush the passer.  Walter Nolen of Ole Miss is versatile and a bit raw. I think he could be an excellent complement to Brown. In round 3:  I would love ILB Danny Stutsman from Oklahoma.  He is a beast. With 11 picks, I would package our 4th rounders to move up into the third round and take a QB.  At the moment, I think Rourke is trending upward and he has the skills Canales seems to want in a QB.  Quick processor, quick release. I would use the fifth rounders on OL.  I know that I left out WR--however, we are getting Thielen back, XL will be improved, Coker will be improved, and Moore has been surprisingly good.  Sanders (TE) has been more than expected in the passing game.  I think we need D more than WR, and maybe we can get a veteran WR to sign or find a hidden gem late.
    • Wouldn't be surprised if he starts a couple Jets games this year with the way the Rodgers thing is going. Giants fans are pissed they didn't keep him lol. He might actually have a little bit of a market.
