Training camp QB progress report

From what people have said, Jimmy Clausen has been doing very well his last two days of camp. He sounds like he is looking solid but not spectacular... but that he is showing improvement. He is still not there yet in all likelihood as he sometimes holds the ball too long and has a bad tendency to get 89 killed, but he also finally got him in the endzone today... albeit in practice.

Cam has had flashes of brilliance mixed with total inconsistency, but that's to be expected. His running ability has apparently been very explosive, but he's had some trouble with the passing game. He's a rookie so that is unsurprising. He's a total charismatic guy though and he apparently never stops smiling.

In other words, both are in need of improvement, both are working at it. perhaps best of all is that the coaching staff has taken to calling plays to suite each player, making them more comfortable in what they are running. They both are working with the 1s and 2s, but it does seem like Clausen is typically opening with the 1s, but I doubt that means much. I am willing to bet that despite reports to the contrary, the Panthers are not set on who is starting yet.

All this is based off tweets. I haven't seen it myself, so.

I concur with this.

All this gleened from tweets in between all the pissing contests over QB's. Early edge to Clausen, as it should be. By no means is the lead insurmountable. Both have a lot of learing to do.

How so?

If it's not even close between the two of them, is it reasonable to think that Cam will bridge the gap in half a season?

Do you mean to say that Clausen is the safer bet now but Newton will be worth "the risk" of multiple interceptions by mid-season?

Cam is not even close to being a starter in this league but neither is Jimmy. But... by mid season Cam will have surpassed Jimmy Jam and may be a legit nfl qb.

People are not going to be happy unless they can rip Clausen. Time to get over it and hope he improves. About the rocket arm --means little with inaccuracy and inconsistency. About the running ability: Means little if it becomes an escape because your arm is inaccurate and inconsistent. What are the two traits every great QB in the NFL has possessed? Intelligence and accuracy.

If you are accurate and intelligent on a regular basis, you are consistent.

He has a long way to go. Period.

So one can assume that all those QBs who took their team to the SuperBowl and won were all "intelligent and accurate."

In my humble opinion, "intelligent and accurate" QBs aren't always winning QBs.

And let's remember, Cam had no OTA and just got to play with his full-team last weekend. If his only issue is two balls going where they should and one isn't, then that can be fixed with reps and some time with his team.

Unfortunately, if Jimmmy's problem is his lack of confidence in himself and lack that will to win at all cost mentality, and is afraid to take chances, then all the intelligence and accuracy in the world isn't going to help him help his team to win. JMO.;)

I was at last Thursday's practice. My 2 cents:

Jimmy was accurate on anything 20 yards and in. Was not impressed by his arm strength, which you could tell on a couple of 15 yard out patterns. He did throw one nice long TD-- he has nice touch on the ball. Can't get out of trouble, but didn't throw any interceptions.

Cam was impressive and inconsistent, as most others are saying. He throws an absolute rocket on those 15 and out patterns-- I was timing how long it took the ball to get there between him and Jimmy and it wasn't even close. That said, he also sailed a couple of those throws. Most impressive thing to me was in 11 on 11 he did step up in the pocket nicely a few times under pressure and instead of running found his second receiver. Doesn't have as good a touch on shorter passes as Jimmy but that'll come.

I think Jimmy starts early in the year but it won't be long before Cam takes over.

Andersen was adequate holding the clipboard.
