QB Conspiracy Theory....

The Redskins still don't have a real QB, unless I'm forgetting a recent FA signing. They might actually be desperate, and stupid enough to go after Jimmy. They run a WCO too, don't they? Dunno what we could get out of them....prolly just a mid round pick.

Speaking of Redskins, and slightly off topic, isn't Andre Carter still a FA? If he can be had on the cheap, he's been a very productive DE in the past when allowed to play DE and not OLB. A little old, but he would be a very good piece for the rotation.

Yea, but CJ, Hardy and Brown are all we got at DE (not including the UDFAs). I think of Norwood's more of a LB. We'll see how they use him.

I don't think DE is a huge need, but I bet Carter could be had for not a lotta $$$ and he's a good player and we could use a little more depth at the position.

They realize they need to get both QB's ready to start and are tweaking the offense for each of them to get the best out of whoever ends up starting.

Exactly. They're not trying to shop him around for a trade; they're trying to ensure that if they have to put Jimmy in, they know the sort of plays he's capable of making and can adjust their gameplan accordingly.

I know it's a shock to think a coaching staff might alter a gameplan or play to someone's strengths, but it is possible folks.

you can tweak an offense......but Chud's will always rely on the vertical pass as a key cog.

I don't know if I would say the vertical pass is a key cog in his O. I see it more as the goal. Just like Jake's early days, you run and make positive gains to set up the play action. Last year we passed to set up the run and with short passing teams played them as runs more or less and we struggled. The two years before we excelled when we pounded for little or no gain to loosen the D until we broke some bigger runs which then opened up some crossing routes and a few seam routes.

I see us going back to more play action this year and I like that approach. We will be playing to our strengths. However we hopefully have an extra weapon in Cam when things break down from time to time.

I believe we will see the "accuracy of Jimmy" show throughout preseason for the sake of either trading him or at least gauging interest out there so a decision can be made about his future with the franchise. I also believe Jimmy is approaching camp and the preseason with this in his mind.

vertical pass was a key cog in the offense when Jake came in. That is what the ground pound sets up. Chud is going to need a QB who will make a lot of the throws Fox required from his QBs.

I agree we will remain a team that relies on the playaction.....but Chud's offesne that we have seen only works when you can go downfield. The reason Clausen couldn't move the offense is he would ignore those throws downfield. Ignoring those throws (you also have to be able to hit them)messes everything else up on offense.

I agree with you. There was not much bite on the playaction last year though and for good reason. Also what he did not do last year does not equate to me to be things he cannot do it at all. While I don't think he is the QB for this offense, I think he can develop into a very good WCO QB in the future. We are gonna see some weird stuff this preseason IMO and while Cam needs reps for sure, the entire offense needs an education, and neither Cam nor Jimmy might be the best guy to supply that from the QB spot. We are breaking in a new stud who represents the future, showcasing another good young player to protect an investment, and installing a new offense all over the next four weeks. It's gonna get confusing for the fans.

    • Agreed on the last part. They can’t afford to lose all these games with Martin and Perets.
    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
