We are NOT over the cap according to Schefter tweet

Sorry, know it's not the thread topic, but what's the deal with the CBA? Can our new guys get on the field today?

If it's done in time, all players can participate in training camp after 4 PM today. 4 PM is when the League year is expected to start, this is why you are seeing a bunch of teams push back practice a few hours.

That's the difference between extremely good and outright terrible cap management. Oakland has been giving out stupid contracts to marginal players for years (Kamerion Wimbley, Stanford Routt, Tommy Kelly, Javon Walker, DeAngelo Hall, plus they're still probably paying Russell) it's why they couldn't afford to keep Nnamdi & Miller despite not having any great players already signed.

The Eagles have a very good front office and know how to work the cap. The Redskins really benefited from dumping Haynesworth's contract on the Pats, not to mention they cut a bunch of veteran guys last week as well, and traded McNabb.

I'm sure some decent CB's will be cut during/after camp, but will there be any worth starting? They get cut for a reason... very few quality starters are there to be found after final cuts.
that reason might be that the cap hit was too big and the team had big needs somewhere else. not everyone entering the market gets there because they sucked.

andrew brandt has been tweeting this morning about the CBA getting ratified and the cap numbers we keep hearing about. might give us some insight as to why we were listed above the salary cap by clayton(?) and then not again by schefter and why schefter's list got smaller...

adbrandt Assuming CBA ratification today, teams under Cap by tmrw. As every yr, only top 51 of 90 player Cap charges count until season starts.

adbrandt Both. RT @ericjudd111 will the teams over the cap be restructuring contacts or cutting players?

adbrandt Again, once bell rings for new League Year (we expect tmrw), teams can never be over the Cap: must release, reduce and restructure.

adbrandt To clarify, all 2011 contracts signed since July 26 effective at 4p today assuming CBA ratification. Nothing has been paid out yet.

adbrandt Cap numbers for NFL teams are all fluid right now, changing by the moment due to additions, deletions, restructures, etc.

adbrandt Am told that 2011 NFL League Year begins the later of 4pm et or whenever teams are notified that the CBA has been ratified.

This isn't all that surprising as the earlier report had us just barely over the cap. And though it's better to be under we're most likely pressed right up to the cap, which still isn't a great situation to be in. Don't expect any significant signings, even if a high profile player is cut we don't have the money to outbid other teams. We'll be filling out the roster with no-name scrubs for the bare minimum.

Didn't know where to post this so I decided to post it here:

espn_afcsouth Paul Kuharsky

Per Clayton: #Colts gave Tommie Harris one-year, $910,000 including $100,000 to sign. Less than Jamaal Anderson's total.

FML, Tommie Harris for a Million for a season, why weren't e all over that?

If you add in the cuts ("Dead Money doesn't count against cap this season") plus the 3 million exception, the Panthers should be around 2 million under the cap. If they extend Kalil's deal, that should free up another 4-5 million.

That would leave enough money to go after pretty much any CB that hits the market in cuts, with the right structuring the team could also make a run at Floyd.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
