NFL Network coverage of Panthers Camp

So far they have only showed Goodell briefly talking at our training camp twice, at 5:29 and 6:07 for anyone that DVRd it. They said they would be showing more throughout the league-wide training camp coverage.

He also gave a big thanks to JR.

they signed a contract with them...you should get it shortly

Targeted to be available along with the RedZone channel before the Thursday Schedule starts after mid-season, maybe available before the season starts. Charter in upstate SC and WNC at least. Not sure about the Hickory area.

Showed Panthers training camp two more times, though only showing Goodell and not any actual Panthers coverage. 6:29 and 6:52. It's pretty clear they are there just for Goodell.

Goodell was signing autographs and had his interview with Hanson @ 6:52.

Can't post in the training camp thread b/c it's locked, but did want to pass this along...

My observations from training camp today:

1) First off, not to belabor it, but Newton had a rough practice in regards to the 11 on 11. He did well in the WR vs. DB drills (TD to Smitty and bomb to Armanti). He looked like a rookie back there really feeling the pressure in the 11 on 11.

2) That being said, he does have a cannon and seems to have a better touch on his deep ball than some of the intermmediate passes. He oozes charisma. The Commish went to visit him after his speech first (almost looked like he was going to totally diss Clausen). Also, it is hard to understate how well the players respond to him. He certainly is WAY ahead of where Clausen was this time last year.

3) That being said, Clausen did have a fantastic practice. I can't imagine he has had many better than this one. Very few incompletions and very accurate. Between having a year under his belt and with Chud's new scheme, he seems to be much more confident. Based on other reports and what I saw, Clausen seems to be the more accurate so far. However, Clausen still rarely goes deep, and it is something that cleary frustrates Smitty, who came up to him after one play telling him he was open. I do want to commend Clausen though. I'm not a big Clausen fan and I don't think he has enough to the starter we need to compete in the NFCS, but he is serious about showing the new coaching staff what he can do. Newton is our franchise guy, but it is nice Clausen is showing that he has some potential and isn't just giving up.

3) Nothing to report on the other QB's. Pike is injured and Anderson can't practice yet. This is a common theme, but it is hard to fully evaluate a lot of things b/c it is so early in camp and so many guys can't practice until tomorrow or are being held out due to minor injury (Kalil and Gettis being 2 notables).

4) This is the 6th year in a row I have been to training camp, and it does seem like there is more coaching going on than I can remember. Good b/c we have both a young team and a new scheme, but not as fast paced as some other times I have been at camp. I do think this will pick up once the other players sitting out (which include the majority of the defensive starters and a lot of the offensive starters) come back and the camp progresses and players understand their assignments better.

5) Armanti looked solid on pump returns and as a receiver. I do think he will make some contributions this year. I think the receiving corp has the potential to be a lot better than some people think. Wallace Wright (remember he was suppossed to be our #3/#4 guy last year and got hurt) had a real nice TD grab.

6) Of course, in discussing the fact that our WR's looked good, it does have to be brought up that our CB's look shaky, especially with Gamble still sitting out. We need him to be good this year. Not any quality depth at all. Captain is definitely the best CB other than Gamble, but we need another starting quality CB desperately. RJ Stanford (but really the whole group outside of Captain) were getting repeatedly abused by Clausen and Newton.

7) During the individual DB drills, Godfrey looked sharp. I know he was taken a lot of heat from fans (still wonder how much of that was Richard Marshall's fault), but he looked fast and looked like he was always in the right spot. He can really close on the football.

8) Rivera was actively involved and coaching in the LB drills. You can tell his background is as a LB. Connor definitely looked the best out of the group there, but once again, almost all of the LB that will make the final roster (Beason, Anderson, Davis, Gaither) were sitting out.

9) Mare made all his field goals. Not going to replace Kasay as the emotional leader, but you can tell he is a pro and has been doing this a while. Paid a lot for the guy, but if he can make all the field goals and give you touchbacks, have to think he's worth it.

10) Shockey and Barnidge both looked solid. It is super obvious the TE's will be more involved. As previously mentioned, Barnidge was also long snapping. Not sure he will replace Jansen, but he wants to be on this team. Not outside the realm of possiblity they will keep 4. They were both the victims of some bad Cam passes.

11) Everrette Brown looked good to me on passing plays. He can get after the QB. However, he can't play the run. Same thing for Norwood, but not as explosive as Brown. They need Johnson and Hardy as the starters in my opinion, but Brown and Norwood can contribute.

12) O-Line looked good on run plays, not as good pass blocking. I think thats normal the first part of camp though. Otah is still a beast on run plays. Brown/ Norwood didn't stand a chance on those. Gross mixed it up with someone- not sure who. Hoping for good things here.

13) Goodson had a couple of great runs. He does have a quick burst and is going to get some touches both as a runner and a receiver. The Panthers really are loaded at RB. Deangelo looked like he was in the shape of his life even though he wasn't doing team drills. Even Sutton is a hard runner-just not enough touches to go his way unless some gets hurt. He has talent, but he is clearly the 4th most talented back on this team.

14) Rivera and the coaching staff seem to be stirring the pot and wanting guys to mix it up. They are definitely having longer practices to compensate for only being allowed one a day.

15) Really surprised how close Goodell was to the fans and how direct he was in answering questions. Did pretty much say Charlotte's not getting a SB, but he crack me up when he told a fan who was questioning the toughness of today's players (i.e. not as many padded practices) to put on some pads and go mix it up and then see what he had to say.

16) Biggest crowd I have ever seen for training camp. Good vibe too- hard to believe we are coming off 2-14. Everyone seems loose- Cam does bring a childlike atomsphere to practice- in a good way. Not as tense as 2006. Even though that team was loaded on paper, it was evident being at training camp there was tension. Same way last year. Beating a dead drum, but pointless to have kept Fox. Anyway...

17) Moving on, Richardson was there and seemed to be in his element with the Commish being there. Was basking in it all. He has been a fantastic owner last year notwithstanding. Spent time with fans and players. Went to Cam first- he does have a magnetic presence.

18) Almost forgot, but rookie DT McClain had some nice plays. It will be interesting to see how well he matchs up once Ron Edwards gets out there with him tomorrow. Still don't have great depth there, but don't think it could be as bad as last year. Regardless, not as noticeable at least in one practice as the glaring need for CB help.

Good practice. A lot of promise on this team, especially long term. Who knows how the season will ultimately unfold. I think the playoffs are a year away. Cam is going to make some great plays, but I think based on what I saw he will struggle too and throw some stupid picks under pressure. I do think we need to turn the ball over to him sooner than later. Clausen has grown, but I don't think the players are behind him and his ceiling is light years below Cam's. Cam can be our franchise guy- I truly believe that. I also find it hard to believe we can go into the season without adding a cornerback or maybe cornerback(s).

I do hope for the best. Excited to see these guys in a game next Saturday

I have the Armanti vid too. But for now.
