Hurney on WFNZ today discusses CB situation

Height/Reach/Leaping Ability is what we need going against what's in our division

Captain matches up well with Lance Moore and people forget Roddy is only 6'0". He just plays like he's 6-3. Williams down in Tampon Bay is 6-1, Stroughter & Spurlock are both below 5-11.

Even though Munn is 5-8, its only a concern when he's lining up against someone over 6-2 imo

How they play and extend there body is just if not more important than their height if we're talking mismatches imo

Not to mention, if our D line plays well enough, there gonna be helping out our CBs in a big way. If anything, I'm more concerned about speed with Gamble & Burney

yeah i'm sure we'll do fine going up against the saints running 3 and 4 WR sets all game, trotting out a couple UDFAs to cover their #3 and #4 guys. Sure Captain will have no problem dealing with Julio Jones or Roddy White when we face atlanta lol

but DeAngleo is a nice guy and insures us from not just having a great backfield but a super duper great backfield. Aren't those bragging rights worth it?

hmm yeh wildly overspending on a couple top free agents and then not being able to fill other glaring needs. sounds like a recipe for success if i ever heard one

The cap hit for Johnson and Williams this year will likely be around 12-13 million. If we signed them cheaply we would have still been around 8-9. I don't know that the 4 million you save buys many hole fillers.

that is why you say good bye to the 28 yr old RB (rely on your younger stud 1st round pick) and start building your team to adjust to the passing era. Get a CB instead of signing Williams.

the only holes we have is at corner and defensive tackle. i really would not be happy if we brought in free agents at those positions that we really dont know what player we are getting. much happier not having issues at defensive end for another 5 years or whatever, and while i like stewart and goodson in the backfield, i'd be terrified if stew went down again and we were stuck with just goodson.

how much under the cap are we?

The defense will be fine this year just watch. The offense is what was broken and has been fixed. I want a corner as well but to overpay for a shut down guy when we will use mostly zone coverage would be a bigger waste of money than paying Williams when we will run the ball alot to help Cam get rolling.

you know exactly what you are getting with Nnamdi, Joseph, Samuel, etc.

We all know Johnson was the right signing regardless of cost. I think the arguement is too strong we likely would be in a better position if we went after a top tier CB w/ DeAngleo's money.

Stewart, Goodson, Sutton, and don't forget Cam......is more of a ground attack then the overwhelming majority of teams can come up with. A Samuel or Joseph for THIS team...would have a greater impact than Williams most likely.

Nnamdi ain't the only corner. Asante > Nnamdi in terms of Carolina.....and he is just sittng there most likely if someone can afford to go get him.

people forget that the captain had virtually no defensive line play last year, and still managed to look decent (he started across from gamble on more than one occasion.)

throw in a couple of defensive tackles actually getting pressure up the middle and keeping the QB from stepping up in the pocket and you're going to elevate the play of the DE position (e. brown will have an 8 sack season, calling it right now) all of which will force the QB to get rid of the ball quicker. for a cornerback, having to cover an NFL wide receiver for a half a second less can make the difference between being the intercepting hero and the touchdown-allowing goat.

so i expect munnerlyn will look a lot better in light of this. also keep in mind that rivera will presumably have the brains to rotate guys in and out depending on who we play (fox and davidson weren't very accustomed to this concept called "individual game plan." where fox might stick a cornerback at a given position regardless of who he's covering, i like to think rivera/mcdermott might see missmatches coming and figure out how to stop it, or exploit it - there's more to success than good execution.

If we really wanted to get him I suspect we could get him. We haven't tried to sign Gross to a long term contract which would free up millions, cut anybody except for Kasay or restructure anybody at this point. I think that they will bring in someone once teams have to get below the cap and after first or second cuts. But like usual it won't be a big name or expensive guy. It will be someone who is good for our system but is undervalued.

Idk man, stand those two next to each other and tell me they have the same athletic talent proportionately. Have you checked wingspan? Have you factored in mass and strength? Not to mention Revis may be the most talented cb in the league.

I dont know where youre headed with that, but Im just sayin, . . . in the NFL, you better be the best and not just really talented for your size.

I added question marks in the hopes that it would be understood to be a question, not a statement. My bad.
