D-Day for Jimmy (and DA): August 12

The first half of the first preseason game is all the time you're giving Clausen to show dramatic improvement, while Newton gets two full seasons? You're too biased for me to take anything you're saying seriously. Step back and consider you're calling the first half of a practice game, one of four, the biggest moment in a second-round second-year player's career. Thanks for playing.

Forget about it. I've learned on here, that the more people try to write, the less they obviously know.

You guys don't need to argue the point... I'm saying Clausen needs to "wow" in a real game setting or it's over. Practice is practice. By all accounts Cam Newton is "wowing" people by running. All accounts of his passing is happy feet and inaccuracy under pressure. But the difference between him and Clausen is that Cam's running ability can compensate for some bad throws. Clausen has to be a lights out passer to compete. That's all I'm saying - he needs to show up next week.

It is not just his running....he has impressed w/ his arm as well. Just b/c he needs to work on accuracy w/ short throws doesn't mean he hasn't impressed.

Cam can make more throws than Jimmy....and that has been clearly obvious in just 2 days.

I've been very consistent about this - the first preseason game will determine Jimmy's fate as a starting NFL quarterback.

Meh, preseason don't mean squat. The huddle drooled all over pickles preseason performance last year. The media was impressed too. If he has a great preseason and plays like he did last year his fate is still sealed.

Really? I remember being very unimpressed with all the quarterback play. Am I forgetting something (being serious here)?

Clausen was bad in the preseason last year......people deflected it and claimed it was b/c he was w/ the 2nd string talent and if he ran w/ the 1s he would have been better.

We saw him run w/ the 1sts in 13 regular season games and he showed nothing then either....just like he has shown no flashes in practices.

I also remember last year being totally digusted during preseason. Not only the QB's either. I was so pissed about the O-Line and I never thought about the QB's because I figured, hell, Moore had momentum coming off the previous season ending, and Clausen was "the most NFL ready QB from last years draft" so I had nothing to worry about. Then the roof came crashing down around all of us. Everyone was so quick to blame the QB they never looked at our defense which didn't start to gel until around mid season, our o-line which was plagued by injury, our coaching staff who was on their way out the door and knew it, and our general team attitude. It just seemed like there was no motivation to excel and do better. "it is what it is" my ass.

Me thinks the OP puts a bit too much value into preseason play...

Guys - welcome to Clausen's bad rap at ND. He played on a bad team and lost a ton of games, and idiots who only read headlines brushed this kid off. Last night his stats didn't look great but he is getting unanimous praise because in the NFL its all about if you can play and not about the The Golden Calf of Bristol like popularity contests of college.
