An NFL Insider Speaks About Carolina and Richardson

I do think that JR went a little overboard on a few of the contracts. Not terribly so, but still we probably could been cheaper. I can't help but wonder if perhaps he was stung by the "cheap" comments from the last couple of years, and over compensated.

Regardless, I do think we can be successful if we get some decent play at QB. Of course, thats a big if.

I don't think the cheap comments had as much to do with it as he wanted to send a message to our players. He didn't want to give them the chance to see what others were offering, he wanted to shock them with the initial offer and close the deal then and there. Serves a couple of purposes: a) less chance of risking competition, and b) morale booster for the individual player AND the rest of the team that sees how JR takes care of his players. Is the end result a mil more a year than we probably could have gotten away with? Probably, but I bet he thinks the extra mil a year is worth it for the morale.

For an example of what squeezing the player to accept as little as they can, look at Osi's current demeanor.

To those looking for JR haters to eat crow:

The JR attackers have been quite annoying but in the end you can't blame them. It's a well known fact that a very large percentage of every fan base isn't very intelligent just looking at general intelligence of the population alone. The Carolina Panthers are certainly not excused from these percentages. Dumb people plus extreme passion often end in whacked-out-of-frame conclusions that are drawn from a limited amount of information and usually skewed with personal feelings of loss that are aligned with team failure.

Jr has shown over and over that he is loyal to a fault and also that he is going to do what he wants with his team based on what he feels is not exclusively NFL-correct but what he feels is correct from a business standpoint. He has accepted criticism with grace and made all the hard decisions look pretty easy in hindsight.

I used to get miffed a bit and even embarrassed about how stupid many Panther fans are but not anymore. Call it what you will. I call it the realization that it's outta my hands, but once I let it sink in that most fans are just dumb because, lets face it, most people are, it became a lot easier to accept the daily flood of ignorant suggestions and opinions made on this board.

With the amount of money we had to spend someone was gonna get overpaid.

Glad a top notch talent and all around great guy like Deangelo was the recipient.

Eggsacklay!

When you cut veterans, do not extend player contracts and don't sign free agents for a year, then you have TONS of cap space. Richardson had to spend that money due to the new CBA....the fact that rookie salaries are capped this year means lots of extra cash, but Richardson spends this money ONLY because he TANKED 2010....he's not some hero....he basically pocketed profits in 2010 by not signing players and spending all the cap money, which freed up the team to have almost $50 or 70 million in cap space not sure how much. Why would I be happy about this? I'm still pissed about the product that Richardson got away with last year. It was pathetic and unfair to the fans.

YAY! Richardson is spending the money that he is required to spend! YAY YAY YAY!!

Keep drinkin the Richardson juice fellers....

Maybe, although it means that in order to send that message, we now have to pay even more for beer and hotdogs in the stadium. :)

hmmm, this does not jibe with what I have been reading that the cap floor is not in effect until next year at earliest, more than likely 2013 and even then it is not enforceable, only a league-wide "guideline".

    • If we don't switch it up and start playing full court pressure D we're just going to have to shoot lights out and have the other team have an off night to have a chance against top teams. We've trailed by 20 in three of our four games and ended up getting back in them by picking up the pressure. This team has to pressure and create pace because we don't have the post presence to play half court ball on either side of the court.
    • Would love to see us sign him to say a 4 year extension structured in a way that pays him most of the money in the first two years with an out after the 2. It protects us to injuries or penalty issues, it gives him a lot of money, and it also gives him an ability to renegotiate in 2 years if he plays at a high level, and if he does, we'd be happy to pay it to him again.
