Panthers Want to Start Newton Week 1

One thing in his favor is that most rookies fall apart when teams blitz creatively. Bottom line is that with McDermott and Rivera, he will get plenty of blitzes every day in practice. He should be ready when the season opens. His issue will be recognizing defenses and calling audibles. That will take time no matter what.

Of course the team wants Newton to start, I'm sure there are very few people that would pick anyone over Newton that is on the roster at the moment. However, the preseason will tell would the starter is going to be. I'm putting money on Newton though.

this is a big thing. the QB and Oline are going to be so much better prepared than they had been for years in dealing with blitzes.

john fox had the offense prepare for a john fox defense, which was a bend don't break soft zone defense. when the blitzing came, we were largely ineffective against it. the worst was last year, though, because defenses learned early on that if they blitz just about every down, even blitzing the rush, we weren't going to be able to handle it so every team tried it and it worked.

this offense is and will be working every practice against two of the top defensive minds in the league...and don't forget that our DB coach has a bit of knowledge of how to run a defense as well. these guys are going to know how to deal with 4-3 and 3-4 defenses and blitzes coming from every direction. having to learn to read rivera and mcdermott's defense is going to really help them in learning how to read most of the other defenses in the league.

Media is just speculating.
pretty safe to say, though, that the ideal situation and what they want to be the case is that the QB they picked #1 overall will be able to start day 1.

to think that they want someone else to start is bordering on foolish. they only have him under contract for 4 years before they have to pay the man big time. i don't think they are going to want to pay him for 4 years for 3 years of starting. they want to get that big boy on the field as soon as they can for as long as they can. they are going to be working to make sure he is ready and newton has it in his head that there is no other way for him to be but ready when the season starts and the pressure is on him to make sure that he is.

they probably won't start him if he is behind where they think he should be or someone else is doing much better, but make no mistake, they want him to start right away.
