The Tight Ends

Regarding Shockey

Shockey sounded like he has come to terms with himself after all he has been through in New York, New Orleans, and with his injury problems, but he sounds like has changed.

I remember him playing in the big apple, and I hated him, I just thought he was a selfish, arrogant, piece of crap...BUT, after hearing all of these positive comments on twitter about him, I'm really pumped to see him in action.

Regarding Olsen

I always liked Olsen, I thought we were going to draft Olsen the year he came out, and I was a little dissapointed that we didn't...BUT, hey everything came togethor. Olsen ended up finding his way to Charlotte the long route and we have are main man Beason that ended up being the pick in that particular draft.

Regarding Barnidge

I like what I'm hearing from Barnidge right now out of training camp (even though we here the same thing every year about him), it seems like him and Cam have a strong connection on the field.

Ben Hartsock

Only blocking tight end on the team, but can't practice until Thursday.

I would like to see the combination of Shockey, Olsen, and Barnidge...BUT, I have feeling that Hartsock may get the last spot due to him being the only true blocking tight end on the roster. Unless, they choose to keep two fullback's and decide to put Hartsock at fullback with Fiammetta, but that would also mean Hartsock would be beating out true fullback Rashawn Jackson, which I don't think is realistic, but you never know.

Wait, are we really aiming to have two fullbacks on the roster? Wouldn't that just take away that extra spot given from replacing our two kickers from last year and getting just one, to get an open spot? I dunno, I didn't think that they'd go for using it on something like the fullback position.

Olsen alone makes our TEs good. People keep worrying about adding another big receiver but they seem to forget that in Olsen we just did. The guy is 6'5". 255 and he runs a 4.5 40. Now compare that to Plaxico, Edwards and all the rest and get back to me.

We have our mismatch problem solved. Teams who double Smitty and leave the other guys in single coverage are going to get abused by our tight ends. Running a 12 personnel with one running back, 2 TEs, and 2 wideouts gives us potentially 5 receivers forcing teams into a nickel. When they do that our running game is going to go nuts.

And in that running game they have to account not only for RB's but our QB

Exactly. If we run a 2 tight end, 2 running back set with the fullback, and split Smitty wide we have essentially a wildcat formation only with Newton we have a guy who can run or throw. If they stuff all the gaps, we have 3 receivers who can burn them counting the tight ends. If they don't run blitz, we can overload the edges and run at will. The difference between Newton and Vick or Cunningham or all the other so called mobile quarterbacks is that Newton is a load at 255 and actually much bigger than almost anyone's back 7.
