Yas: Mixed reviews on Cam Newton's Debut

From Yas's NFC South blog:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- There were some spot-on frozen ropes and a few balls that sailed beyond receivers or tailed behind them. There was a botched handoff in which the ball ended up on the ground and there was the moment of brilliance we saw so much of in college when the quarterback tucked the ball and ran for roughly a 20-yard gain.

Yeah, I've learned to not even scroll down and read the comments... pure hate.

I've been saying it since we drafted the guy...He is better than Mike Vick when Vick entered the league. He has all the potential in the world if we can keep him afloat this year and let him learn from his mistakes (assuming he will be mature enough to do that and take the criticism).

1st day sounded good.

It's those "moments of brilliance" we've been missing around here lately... to have "moments of brilliance" in your first padded practice as a rookie QB means you are ahead of the curve, this is encouraging news.

TBH I sure everyone is going to be rusty the first real practice back. He needs to stumble early so he can learn from his mistakes and understand what it takes to be a NFL QB. He will progress because he is talented and smart.

    • Right now today? Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Burrow Maybe Hurts, (big) MAYBE Herbert esp. after that game. That's it. Caleb, Daniels, Maye, Nix, and Stroud are TBD. Bryce is honestly in this group as well but he's on our team now and those guys aren't. I'm not swapping one unknown for another today. I'm certain at least 1 of these guys will end up better than Bryce, but I can't say who that will be. I do not have clairvoyance like you. Regarding Bryce being top 20 QB. IF he continues to play like he has in the last 10 games, then he is a top 15 QB already. I am hoping he will. Look, Bryce is an odd duck. Biggest bust in draft history. Got sent to the bench and six weeks later he looks like another QB. He's posting 100+ passer ratings in multiple games. He's going TD for TD with Pat Mahomes. But then there's Dallas. 1 stinker in a string of games where he looked better than the last game, over and over again. When we see him again, will he be Week 1 Bryce or Week 18 Bryce? Idk, but those just discounting his play over the last 10 games are probably being foolish. 36% of his career he's looked decent to amazing. This is a what have you done for me lately league and lately bryce young has been hot. Nah, I'm not trading Bryce for anybody except those 4 today. Otherwise I'm sticking with Bryce to see if he continues to do what he's been doing and can he maintain this level play. That is my biggest question with Bryce. Can he keep playing like this and how often are we going to have a Dallas game with him? Come back to me this time next year about those other guys. My opinion will be different then one way or another.
    • Unfortunately Dani Dennis Sutton just committed to next year at Penn State 😞
    • A new lot of players on that side of the ball
