Panthers signing Derek Anderson

Recommended Posts

I never heard that his playbook was simple. I heard he played in an offense that has historically not translated well to the NFL (unless you get into a spread-like system such as Green bay)

You want big fat NFL players commenting on Newton:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/news/story?id=6355471

If he is ready week 1 it would be a complete shock to me. Maybe he is enough of a phenom to do it.

so take the opinion of someone with no actual knowledge about what newton can do, has done, or is doing over that of someone who is working with him.

makes total sense.

whatever helps justify your opinion.

Even if Newton starts, and does well, he could get sidelined by injury. Then what?

This guy had Larry Fitzgerald and he only threw 10 TD passes last year! (On a team that was in the Super Bowl two years ago). I'm in no way a Matt Moore fan, but I'll take him over DA any day of the week.

Kalil said he didn't have a simple playbook. He didn't say he is NFL ready.

The point is Newton was a very risky pick and the front office has no idea if we were to have serviceable QB on the roster with Clausen and Newton week 1 or week 10 for that matter.

Signing a vet was the 100% right move

You start Cam because he is our long term solution

No way in hell. You give Cam as much time as he needs because he is our long term solution.

Or are you the type that thinks a horrible rookie campaign invariably leads to better results in the future?

Better prospects than Cam have been ruined by getting thrown directly into the fire unprepared for what they were facing. I want him to know our playbook inside and out before he takes a snap. He can't possibly get that done before the season starts.

I agree.

The assumption was he had a "spectacular" training camp/preseason. Any number one QB pick should be able to earn the job day 1 if they do well enough.

Clausen had Smitty....threw 3....none to Smith or any other WR.

Just about any QB signed is better than Clausen/Pike....therefore it upgrades our roster from where it was. Even if it is a garbage QB like Anderson. We had much worse.

top tier talent doesn't sit........sitting top talent at the QB position isn't the norm. For every Aaron Rodgers......it is countered by trio like Ryan, Flacco, and Sanchez. In today's league.....if you are going to cut it.....you have to be able to do it right away if needed.

But Rivera and staff beg to differ on that opinion.

I believe they will play Cam when they think he is ready....I just have a feeling that won't be until part way through the season.

I'm a Smitty fan, but please don't compare him to Fitzgerald. Not in this point of his career.

Flacco and Sanchez walked into vet teams that had the schemes down...along with Top 5 defenses. We have a new scheme and potential on defense. Very different situations.

And, no matter how much of the blinded Cam lovers want to discount it, he DID come from a spread offense. He can make the transition, but it is a bigger growth than for an NFL style offense. Throw in that the coaches could not speakto him for months, and he has a major uphill battle.

I love his potential and his work ethic, but also realize his weaknesses at this time. I would be surprised if he starts day 1....and would be even more surprised if he was successful this season if he does.
