Panthers signing Derek Anderson

Recommended Posts

Far too much is made of the question "is he a mentor", in regards to having a veteran QB on the roster. I think it's fictional aspect promoted by the media to write stories for them. There are ZERO quarterbacks in this league that do not want to start and will not handle it poorly if they are demoted to back up quarterback unless they've lost the fire to play. The "value" of having a veteran QB on the roster is for the younger players to WATCH him prepare, see how much work he puts into gameplanning and working the playbook, watching how he performs on game day, and watching his mistakes and learning from those so they don't have to make them on their own.

Do you think Joe Montana invited Steve Young to take his job? Nobody wants to lose their job to some smart ass rookie. I don't care how well they talk it up in the media about doing everything they can to help the kid, they aren't coaches. They aren't paid to be coaches. They want to start and they want to win and they want personal success. If they can offer something to a young kid on the way, they usually do it. However, signing up a veteran and expecting him to be a second QB coach is having too many voices in the kid's ear hole. If you trust your QB coach, there is no need for a "mentor" veteran QB.

Plus, Cam does not strike me as the kind of kid that is so shy that he needs a veteran to bring him out of his shell to ask questions and to learn from. I just hope he's not so confident he won't listen to his coaches.

while it may not sound like it, i agree with you.

for a long time i thought that the role of "mentor" was overrated for the most part. that is needed when the player needs to learn how to prepare and carry himself as a professional, something that i don't think is the case for either newton or clausen. in some cases it is needed. it was needed with vick, for example, and it wasn't until he got to philly and had been in prison that he got that from both dungy (as a man) and mcnabb (as a professional).

what i want on the team is someone with real starting experience (years) who knows how to read a defense and can show what teams are doing from experience defensively as well as on the sidelines. the rest of the prep comes from his coaching staff. if we have a coaching staff worth a crap (and i think we do) then they should be able to provide everything he needs to help him learn the system. the only thing is i don't want this QB to be an ass. DA *might* be able to help with knowing what to spot on the field from defenses, but he can't be counted on to not be an ass.

in my book Anderson just isnt worth the money, he's still fairly young and doesnt sound like the type to accept coming in to be the backup to a rookie or to Clausen, i think Jake would accept it, especially if he wants to be a coach in his later life.

Cam should not be ready week 1. If he is and wins the starting job then we are in great shape.

But he will not be and DA would be a decent option to run the offense.

Right. Cam doesn't need a mentor. He just needs someone to watch who knows how to play NFL QB. Cam should be smart enough to pick it up.

Or Jimmy. I guess.

I'm sure that's why they are going to talk to him tomorrow. They will tell him how it is and what they expect from him. I've read Ron is a honest straight forward guy. If DA is not interested, then they'll tell him to kick rocks and find employment elsewhere.

You can debate all you want about whether or not Newton needs a mentor.

Regardless of your feelings on that topic, Derek Anderson isn't one.

"Mentors" tend to be guys who have longer and more consistent records of success than Anderson does.

On that front, Anderson isn't especially more qualified than Matt Moore was.

what are you seeing that shows Anderson is a decent option to run the offense??? this guy couldnt win with Fitzgerald and was replaced with Skelton, sorry, i just dont see him being anything but a 3rd string QB, the best option to win (IF Cam isnt ready) is let Clausen play and see if he's improved, not hand the job to a guy whose a journeyman for a reason.

Anderson won't start. He's here (or will be, the deal's basically done) because he knows the offense and has history with Chud. He can help Jimmy & Cam learn the offense and be a backup. Plus, he's cheap.

Nothing wrong with this move at all.

he's not a great QB, yet he went to the pro bowl running Chud's system. that says a lot. maybe he won't be our start QB but if he can show CAM on the field how to run the system, and prepare then i wouldn't mind seeing him be our starter this year.

i'm saying it now, he might not amount to much more than a teacher, but it wouldn't shock me a damn bit for him to return to pro bowl form in chud's system with the supporting cast he'd have around him.

i say sign him. i couldn't imagine a more perfect vet to bring in to tutor cam in this complex passing offense.

Derek was a product of chud if he can mold anderson into the probowler he once was im all for it. It'll give cam more time to learn the system.

Who better to help our current QB's get a grasp on Chud's offense other than his original QB. You guys are sounding very foolish.

If he's even signed, this will be a big move.

like i said, i have no issue with the move if he's the 3rd string QB, but if he starts i think it's a mistake.
