"I don't know what I did, but it worked."

At least #2 doesn't have to be labeled the most arrogant guy on the team anymore.

I've heard a lot from 89, but haven't heard that Cam was the reason he stayed.

Steve Reed

Cam Newton said of getting Steve Smith to return: "I don't know what I did. But it worked. I was going to call all of the fire marshals in the state of North Carolina before he was going to get out of here. I'm excited to have him back. His presence makes a big impact."

Cam is likely a part of why Smitty stayed. This is from a Reed article:

He also comes with a little more street credibility than Clausen, a point that can’t be underestimated. For the past several weeks Smith has been working out in Charlotte with Newton, not Clausen. Sure, Clausen has been on the other side of the country, but Newton is a guy Smith may see a little bit of himself in.

“We mesh,” Smith said of his relationship with Newton.

edit: and as catman72 just said below, I highly doubt he intended to call in the fire marshalls. the point was he was willing to do practically anything to keep him here I think :p

I'm sure Cam keeping quiet about their private practices, went a long way with Smitty. Also I can see their relationship developing to a point where Smitty becomes protective over Cam. Since their lockers are next to each others, I'm sure he'll be monitoring plenty of Cam's interviews.
