Did Hurney do a good job in FA?

That is what I am hoping for, and I hope you are right. I suppose when it gets down to it, the core is the priority, but the positions within the core have to be looked at separately. We have no other options at LDE, WLB, and maybe even SLB. But we did at RB. I would have offered him a fair market contract with a hometown discount. I think the DW deal was "Jakish"

We don't just need role players at CB and DT, we need starting-quality players. Maybe they have a plan, but the question was asked now. As of now, the jury is still out.

And for those who think an alternative opinion to your own is "bitching", I am a big DW fan, I have a signed authentic DW jersey--but I am looking at this from the business side. There is no way the move was not questionable.

we had to keep williams for a lot of reasons. you can question it all you want, but the important thing was to keep him.

the dude is great for the lockerroom. not just as a leader, but to keep everyone's spirits up. you do it because it makes your other top RB better. williams and stewart make each other better. the two of them are on a whole other level than the other guys playing the position. williams especially. he's a technician. there's some clip on panthers.com that he goes through what he's thinking in situations and it's amazing.

anyway, they also need him for cam newton. for the first few years, just like with any rookie/green QB, you are going to be relying on the run and will have to run the ball about 35+ times a game if you have any hope of being competitive. thats pushing 600 times in a 16 game season. you need as solid an RB corps as possible to be able to accomplish that. with the beating that RBs take on a regular basis, it makes sense to have a deep bench.

could they have made due with less? maybe, but why risk it? why not go with what you know is a great combination and build up around it?

did they pay too much for williams? maybe, but you do things like that because you appreciate what they bring to the team and to the game. things like that is what is going to help bring other talented people here...knowing that the organization values its personnel and doesn't think of them just as commodities. we may have gone a bit overboard, but considering what was done prior to the 2010 season, it needed to be done. right or wrong, it needed to be done.

I think JR told Hurney to wrap up contracts but it appears to me Hurney gets a bad grade on the execution of the contracts. After watching Philly and new England it appear we have overspent in the signing of all our FAs and others.I agree we needed to resign CJ, beason and others but felt we grossly overpaid.CJ has received the largest contract in all free agency.Beason is now the highest paid Lb in the league. We paid 12 million for a 38 year old kicker.Hindsight is 20/20 but it appears that this was a knee jerk reaction to the pathetic job he did last year. The net is we resigned our FAs signed 3 TEs,and downgraded our Kicker.

We are still missing a starter at cb and DT. We are still missing a veteran Qb and depth at OT if Otah goes out again

On the flip side I see our coaches making an effort to make it easier for Cam by adding a very good TE.With the exception of the kicker we are doing the right thing but we paid to much and still do not have all the key pieces to break out of the basement of the NFC south.Just my opinion

Seriously, you guys need to look at facts of the NFL and be more realistic.

#1) In the New CBA there is more $$$ available for player + Teams now have to spend much more money. That means salaries this year across the board will be higher than in previous years.... And 5 years from now those contracts will be even higher!

#2) Every team in the NFL has needs! If every team could just go out, pick the best player for their position of need, then all teams would be good. But that's not how it works. It's not easy to jusy go out and say I need X,Y,Z, and I am going to go sign some of the best players in that postion....

You are competing with other teams, sometimes those player have a preference on where they play, The team has to look out for not only this year, but the long term future. The coaches has to pick players the feel fit into what they want to do (And us fans don't know the coaching staff well to know exactly what they are looking for). The front office has evaluations on FA's and the players we currently have, so while 1 player may seem like an upgrade on the outside to us, it may not be much of a long term upgrade to them, therefore not worth the money.

#3) Did we over pay for some players, sure, I believe so. But look at how excited the locker room is. Steve smith all of a sudden wants to retire here. You build a desirable place by taking care of your own, and building a winning team, which we have started doing.

#4) We are still rebuilding! We aren;t in a situation where our window is closing so we need to win Now. So the team does not need to Fix everything this year! And a expensive (or non value) patch can hurt us later down the road. So the tesm needs to build not just for this year, but make moves than will help us 2,3,4 years from now.

Seriously, if it was as easy as you all try to make it sound, Buffalo, Cincy, Washington, 49ers, Broncos, Dolphins, and every other Mediocre or Garbage team would not be losing as they would just make these quick easy fixes.

I don't think we need another DT as much as some believe. If they just resign Landri I don't think we need another one at all. We DO still need a CB2, but that isn't going to make or break our season...if it were so simple to fix ALL areas of need, they probably would have.

I've been calling for Marty's head for quite some time now, but now I've changed my tune.

It was important for us to lockup the players we have for the lengths we have. We have a 4 year period to try to accomplish a title without loosing a single piece of the puzzle. Salaries will catch up to the CJ and Beason contracts, so I'm not concerned about the monies we have payed them.

We couldn't address every situation this year and it often takes a while to either develop or acquire the pieces necessary to field a top caliber team. We will pick up a FA @ CB but he wont be top tier talent. We don't need a top corner to push all the throws over to Gamble, we need a few good corners not just one. We will pick up one this FA season (don't re-sign Marshall, plz!! ) but I figure Marty is trying to develop the other 2 or so we need. Unfortunately our CB draft pick form WV is PUP right now.

As far as vet QB, the guy we need isn't on anybody's radar so we rightfully put that on the back burner as we worked out the contracts we needed to do. There has been alot of talk about Jake, but I think Jake isn't the guy we need. Sure, we could get a Bret Farve (I send pics of my junk to women too, but since I'm poor they never sue) but any high profile name would cause trouble for Cam when that loosing streak inevitably starts. I'd prefer a QB who knows Chud and what he's trying to accomplish, or no vet at all.

I think a strong case can be made that we have all the QB we need right now. It's up to Mike Shula to bring Cam along and a vet who wants to play that next game won't be so inclined to help a struggling Cam. If that vet QB isn't interested in playing, he should be a consultant not a player. But that argument is for another thread.

Marty has done a fine job in keeping core players despite the 2-14 record that normally sends FA's out the door. Look at the front office troubles in Cinci and how that is affecting that team (see JJ's comments) or having to bite off every basket case like Bill Belichick has done to get players in. We aren't scraping the bottom nor do we have any one demanding out of a contract. Despite our "highest paid player at that position" contracts, we are not at the cap.

It pains me to say it, but I think Marty Hurney may be one of the best GM's in the game at this time..

Stop bitching about the Mare signing. Kasay is a great but it was time to cut ties, out of all of the available K's Mare was the best available. Add in that we save a roster spot by having Mare on the team and it is a push.

Also, the Bucs spent $19 mil on a punter that is not even in the top 29 punters in the league at net yards. So we should all stop bitching at each other and go to the Bucs board and mock them relentlessly.

Regarding Mare, I would have preferred they get someone younger and more of a long term resolution of the position.

But overall, I do think its an upgrade. Mare's numbers from long range are nearly on par with Kasay's and he can kickoff.

While it would have been nice to get someone younger that can give you 10+ years at the position, there was no one available that was a young, really good kicker that wasn't going to be resigned by his old team.

Barth is the only one available and I just don't like him all that much. Mare was the best available that was actually available.

I'm pretty sure Hurney isn't done yet, but I can't really complain about anything he's done so far. The whole idea of the new rookie salary cap was to give more money to the veterans who have proven themsleves, and that's exactly what's happening here. You draft players, develop them, and then reward them when they succeed.

Being one of (if not this boards biggest hater) of Hurney, I can wholeheartedly change my tune on the guy. He's made some straight up stupid ass moves in the past, but in this offseason he's done everything you've expected out of a top tier GM.

Hurney is redeemed in my eyes, and can fully say he's a great GM.

Now go get a CB you bitch.
