Did Hurney do a good job in FA?

We did not downgrade our kicker. We upgraded. We now have an extra roster spot by getting rid of Rhys and Kasay.

As a bad team us overpaying wasn't surprising but look at it like this. We had to spend 99% of the cap, while some teams are waiting and will have to throw lots of money at average players we threw ours at good to great players.

No one knows the cap situation so we still can sign a CD, DT, QB, and OG/OT. It's not far fetched it's just that after the crazy couple of days we had because we have slowed down now we are done.

So far this offseason gets a B+ to A- from me. Signed all our core guys (except Kahlil) and got an upgrade at TE and K. How is that not a good offseason?

The spending limit does not come into play until 2013

If Hurney had offered less and the players had gone to other teams, this thread would be a different kind of bitching.

They can spend every damn dime for all I care as long as we see a better team on the field.

Well you will care if we we cannot sign a decent cb and we get burned all year long. These are our FAs and we should no how much it will take to get them.CJ was shocked at the amount we paid him.I think you will also see we grossly overpaid for DWILL.That 4 or 5 million translates into a good DT or CB and thats why I care

There is a reason that multiple multi year extensions do not happen on many teams, one of which is that all these guys will have to be assessed in 3-4 years, meaning we will once again have multiple extensions or cuts to make.

The second reason is that our whole core is tied into the the exact same time frame, meaning we are going to need multiple backups ready to take over at the same time.

Finally, we aren't giving ourselves much room to extend anyone next year or the year after.

Look at the differance in what Atlanta paid Ray Edwards. All the talking heads had CJ and Ray Edwards rated very closely giving CJ the edge.

Couple problems with this idea. First, Atlanta is a more desirable location for a FA right now because they're coming off a successful season, whereas we're not. So a FA is more likely to sign with a team that had a successful season the year before for less money than a team that picked #1.

Second, what talking heads had Ray Edwards as close to as good as CJ? Maybe you're looking at it as CJ was #1, Edwards was #2 of this year's DE FAs but who else was there? If Peyton Manning and Jimmy Clausen and no one else were FAs at the same time, Peyton would be #1, Jimmy would be #2. Would they be close? Ray Edwards is a solid player and may be a very good DE without the quality linemates that he had in Minnisota, but I just don't see it yet.

Once the cap is raised we'll have plenty of room for that and then some. Had we offered any less we'd probably be sitting here without DeAngelo, C.J., and James Anderson, and without (FINALLY) a big pass-catching TE. Not to mention Smith would probably have not backed off his trade demands because he would have seen that we weren't committed to keeping our best guys.

The NFL is expensive. We had a lot of high-profile free agents and soon to be free agents. You can't expect to low-ball your best players and expect ANY of your future studs to want to re-sign.

I recall Beason saying that he purposely tanked his workout with the Patriots prior to the 2007 draft because he didn't want to go there because he didn't feel they were committed to their core players.

Exactly what would you have preferred, out of curiosity?

From Scrooge to Daddy Warbucks in less than a week. Either way we is screwed.

This. As a bad team the media is going to criticize every decision we make regardless pf it's validity, simply because we went 2-14 last year. I'm not saying all moves were optimal but each player we resigned performed within or at the top of the top 10 players in their respective positions last year. With the new rookie pool and cap rules, vets are going to be paid more; these contracts are going to be in line with what you'll be seeing in 2-3 years.

What we need to realize is that Hurney is rewarding our good players, and setting up a league-wide opinion that the Panthers are an organization that is not afraid to pay for talent.

Oh noes the sky is still falling!

Of course it isn't. However I would prefer that we occasionally make a tough decision and let those people who aren't value for money walk.

Personally I felt like CJ was a must, almost regardless of contract. However I would have weighed up between DWill, Anderson and TD and signed one or two of them. The fact is with Beason, Connor, Stewart and Goodson, extending these guys was really a luxury. Whilst it's nice to have them all, there could be issues in 3-4 years when they are all up for renewal.

How many teams do you know that carry that amount of extensions? It just doesn't happen. It stops you extending anyone in two to three years and forces you to make cuts on people you ideally want to keep.

Well...I thought the whole 2-14 season was engineered from the very beginning. By spending next to nothing and letting practically ALL of the veteran leadership go, JR sent a message to fans that we were entering a re-building period. He says he didn't expect us to be as bad as 2-14, but I mean, look...they put a lot of guys on IR that probably would have played out the season if the Panthers had been competitive. He let Fox and Davidson hang around way too long, but, I can see the thinking behind: why bring in a brand new coach for a season we're just going to throw away? It was both a way of cutting spending and saving in order to make important investments down the line. Let's not pretend that the organization was IN ANY WAY set up for success last season. We never had 2-14 talent...it was engineered to collapse. I mean, we did end up with the #1 pick in the draft and "coincidentally" JR is a major player in a deal that pays rookies half of what they would have made in 2010. But now that things have worked out in a near perfect way for JR, I think he genuinely wants to go back to spending money and fielding a truly competitive team.

Re-signing ALL of our top talent (FA and extensions) shows that JR believes in the bst players on this team. The new coaching staff is full of great choices. IF Hurney can complete the picture by scoring a decent CB and vet QB, we could be somewhat competitive. We are poised for a big bounce back (I don't see us above .500 with our schedule).
