Did Hurney do a good job in FA?

I think JR told Hurney to wrap up contracts but it appears to me Hurney gets a bad grade on the execution of the contracts. After watching Philly and new England it appear we have overspent in the signing of all our FAs and others.I agree we needed to resign CJ, beason and others but felt we grossly overpaid.CJ has received the largest contract in all free agency.Beason is now the highest paid Lb in the league. We paid 12 million for a 38 year old kicker.Hindsight is 20/20 but it appears that this was a knee jerk reaction to the pathetic job he did last year. The net is we resigned our FAs signed 3 TEs,and downgraded our Kicker.

We are still missing a starter at cb and DT. We are still missing a veteran Qb and depth at OT if Otah goes out again

On the flip side I see our coaches making an effort to make it easier for Cam by adding a very good TE.With the exception of the kicker we are doing the right thing but we paid to much and still do not have all the key pieces to break out of the basement of the NFC south.Just my opinion

We did not downgrade our kicker. We upgraded. We now have an extra roster spot by getting rid of Rhys and Kasay.

As a bad team us overpaying wasn't surprising but look at it like this. We had to spend 99% of the cap, while some teams are waiting and will have to throw lots of money at average players we threw ours at good to great players.

No one knows the cap situation so we still can sign a CD, DT, QB, and OG/OT. It's not far fetched it's just that after the crazy couple of days we had because we have slowed down now we are done.

So far this offseason gets a B+ to A- from me. Signed all our core guys (except Kahlil) and got an upgrade at TE and K. How is that not a good offseason?

You gotta expect that some of the best in the league (which Beason, Johnson, and Williams are) are going to get big contracts, since the rookie wage scale is sending millions of dollars to the vets. I have no qualms about how much we spent to retain those guys, especially since all 3 of them were the top FAs at their respective positions.

For field goals, Mare is a downgrade, flat out. Even at over 50 yards. The only benefit is his longer kick offs...

I agree with the OP. Personally I think it's very naive to sign/extend around 6-7 players on 5 year deals, all of which were well paid contracts. In 3-4 years time we basically will be stuck with having to cut all these players or extend them to get out of cap issues.

I think you are wrong about the cap floor this year.If you look at other threads you will see Kasey has a better FG completion record. We could have signed a younger and less expesive kicker.3million per year for an old kicker is A+?

It all depends on the contracts which I imagine are frontloaded more then backloaded. We signed our core guys to 5 years because they are 27-28. Any more then that and we'd be stuck with 33-34 yr old LBs and DEs and whatnot.

Apparently you are forgetting

1. Getting the best DE FA resigned

2. Getting the best 4-3 MLB extended

3. Getting a Top 5 or Top 10 TE

4. Getting 2 of the Top 10 OLB FA resigned

5. Gaining a Roster Spot by signing that K

6. Getting the Top RB FA resigned

7. Signing 2-3 UDFA that could make the team and actually help out when most times UDFAs are just camp fodder

so yes it's a B+/A-

On top of the fact free agency isn't over yet.

On the cap floor - You must spend 99% by the END of the season. When the 2013 offseason/season gets here it'll be 89% but until then it's 99%.

Mare is an upgrade over Kasay. On field goals they're about even, but Mare can do kickoffs. It's not a huge upgrade, but it is an upgrade.

And I'm not worried about the cap, TBH. When the league signs a new TV deal in a couple years the cap will be MUCH higher than it is since it's based on that. If we're below the cap now with all our core guys locked-up we're going to be sitting pretty in 2-3 years.

Also, I've heard a lot of people talk about how Ray Edwards was so much cheaper than C.J. First off, Johnson is better than Edwards hands-down. He dominated on a DL where he was basically the only quality player while Edwards benefited from Jared Allen and Pat and Kevin Williams. Second, he was being targeted by a division rival and we had to keep him at all cost, and third, Edwards got a low-ball offer anyway. I really think he panicked after not being courted as heavily as he thought he'd be.

I promise you had we not re-signed Johnson he wouldn't have lasted until Friday.

I am not saying that we should have not resigned our FAs.I am saying that it could have been done for consideribly less money.Look at the differance in what Atlanta paid Ray Edwards. All the talking heads had CJ and Ray Edwards rated very closely giving CJ the edge.CJ was paid well over any other FA in this fre agency on having one great year. That to me is stretching it.Even CJ stated said he was blown away with the amount of money he received meaning he could have been had for less.
