Panthers.com: Kasay released-Thanks John Thread

A great kicker, but he was so much more than that. He was the trusted conscience of the team. His contributions to the team off the field, behind the scenes are likely much bigger than will ever be known.

I believe he deserves to be in the ring of honor. His leg won games. His leadership got the team through difficult times. Guys like him do not come around very often.

Sad day, but knew it would be here someday soon. Wish he had retired instead of being cut.

Best wishes John. Thanks for everything you have done for this team.

In a thread full of great messages to the iconic kasay, I don't think it could be said any better than this.

I have seen his every kick. I've seen his impact, and his influence throughout the locker room and on the field.

Thank you john, your the best!

We all knew it was coming sooner rather than later, but I always thought he'd retire rather than be cut. It's a shame, but a necessary step for the team.

For those who say a kicker doesn't deserve a statue, John was more than 'just a kicker' to this organization and the community. Certainly he deserves a spot in the hall of honor and his number retired, but the argument can be made for a statue.

I love Kasay as much as the next guy that can spell his name correctly, but you don't give out statues to kickers that set up game winning drives for the opposing team in our only Super Bowl appearance....

or rather kickers in general. yeah that's easier

Kasay and I actually attended UGA at the same time. While he was kicking his way to glory and riches, I was discovering my call as an activist in race relations which has been largely a lesson in futility and "poverty". Anyway...When the Panthers first got him I absolutely knew they had gotten a winner.

John, you were one of the best! You probably don't want to go back home to Athens after having the amount of success you've had, but Georgia would probably love to have you back in some capacity. Does your Dad still work as a coach? Anyway, you've done well for yourself, and you should've been allowed to leave Charlotte your way. But, you really can't feel bad with how your overall career turned out, so I suggest that you retire, throw those cleats in the back of the closet, and skip down the street kicking a can while singing Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy". You're a class act!

What a bonehead, classless move to cut John Kasay. And all because the kickoff is moving up five yards... really? This is how an organization treats a respected player who for 16 years has been the hallmark of everything good that his team supposedly represents? Were there no other options than to sign a kicker who, in stats and opinions, is inferior to the one you are cutting? Did Panther management explore ANY other options before making this colossal mistake? Keeping Lloyd for one. Is it not worth one third or fourth string spot on the roster to keep your teams most beloved player, especially when he is still at the top of his game? There's also the option of searching for a punter who can perform kickoffs, as I think most fans would agree that Baker is far more dispensable than John Kasay.

This is worse than what they did to Jake Delhomme. Even then when Jake was playing poorly, although with the receiving corps the team had, much of his performance was excusable, it seemed obvious to many that getting rid of the QB that led us to the Superbowl in favor of Matt Moore was ludicrous. And in the end no one benefited from that blunder. Now there's rumor that they might want him back, when he shouldn't have been gone in the first place. Boneheads.

At the very least the top brass have lost my respect and at best the team maintains status quo on the field at the loss of their most respected player. All because of 5 yards, sad.

What was ludicrous was starting Jake Delhomme 2 years past due over a better player in Matt Moore. Then proceeding to sacrifice the only QB who proved he could do anything in this offense by drafting an overhyped QB, cutting valuable veterans, signing no FA's, and playing said QB one week after a concussion.

Everything about Kasay I agree with though. You must be his son.

    • I did get some coin in on the Knicks to win the whole thing at +3300 immediately after they won game two and before their odds made a huge shift so I'm not mad at this news. I don't expect them to win but I'll probably be able to cash for a good amount if they make the finals.
    • Horn and T-Mac will get matched up a lot, but it won't be 100% of the time, nor should it be anything close to that. Yes, it would benefit T-Mac's ability to get better at beating the press, but it would also be a detriment both of them for them to be matched up too much more than 50% of their reps. Neither is likely to end up going up against similar players in games, not many teams have WRs the size of T-Mac and not many teams have CB's with the physicality of Horn.  Horn needs to work on covering smaller shiftier WRs as well, just as T-Mac needs plenty of reps against smaller CBs so he can work on using his frame to body them out of position.
    • Tatum tore his Achilles it looks like. At least watching the injury that's what it seems to be. He's probably out all next year and Boston sucks and gets a lottery pick. :insert eye roll here:
