NEWFOUND MOTIVATION: Although the Panthers showed him plenty of respect by giving him such a huge contract, Johnson still has found a source of motivation from some of his critics this week.

Johnson said he’s heard some in the media suggest his huge season as a first-year starter (11.5 sacks) is more an anomaly than a sign of things to come.

When asked if he expects opposing teams to focus on him more this year after the numbers he put up last year, Johnson said fired away sarcastically. “I don’t know, man, people say I’m a one-hit wonder so I don’t think they are going to be looking at me like that. I’m going to earn my money.”

Yep, he’s still got a chip on his shoulder, and plans to use those comments as motivation this season.

This was the 2nd most encouraging thing to me...

GLAD TO SEE SMITH BACK: David Gettis said he was thrilled when he found out through his mother that fellow WR Steve Smith was returning to the team.

“I love it. That’s my big brother,” Gettis said. “I wanted to be quiet throughout the offseason on that, but for him to be here is great for us, and it’s great for him. We love having him around the meeting rooms and I really look up to him.”

Smith said he’s seen the offensive playbook and loves it. In particular he said there are “seven to 10 plays” he can’t wait to run in practice.
