Hurney's Drafts (Put in Perspective)

SnarkAttack

Recommended Posts

At least 3 (maybe more) recent 1st rounders have been cut today, including 2 defensive ends (D. Harvey, J. Anderson) and a WR (Jenkins). Just kind of puts it into perspective when we complain about Hurney's drafting. Does he make dumba$$ trades sometimes? Of course. But he rarely misses on a first rounder and he's getting Pro Bowl productivity from 3 former 3rd rounders (Smitty, CJ, Anderson) as well as key contributions from a number of late rounders, including Hardy (6 rd), Gettis (6 rd), Munnerlyn (7 rd), Schwartz (7 rd?).

Just sayin'....

Also, as a side note, the Falcons passed on Revis, Beason and Patrick Willis to "snag" Anderson.

As a post-side note, there are a ton of terrible players that came out of the 1st round of 2007 - should make us even happier we picked up Beason.....

Despite what people think once you get into the later rounds no one really knows what they're doing. Most of the time when people get a 4th round starter it was by luck instead of actually skill. I can't knock the guy for not getting a starter in every single round.

nah thats bullshit. Theres too many scouts on the payroll to not know.

I have never doubted Hurney in the first rd its the 2nd, 4th, and 5th that he is completely inept. And if you build through the draft you cant afford to miss on 45% of the draft.

Now people need to realise that most teams miss on about 45% of the draft. You only realise it because you folow the Panthers.

I would love it if someone was anal enough to look into each round and see success rates. A nice metric would be staying beyond the rookie contracts.

Who cares? Four winning seasons in 16 years, with no back-to-back winning seasons. Wow, he's good at picking the right first rounder. Whoopee!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hurney became GM in 2002, can't really blame him for things that proceeded him...

nah thats bullpoo. Theres too many scouts on the payroll to not know.

Do you know how many college players there are? Do you realise there are very few measurable metrics that actually relate to good play? A lot of it is 'hunches'...

Hurney is easily a top-10 GM. We sometimes lose sight of how good he is, but there are some fuging awful GM's out there. Jerry Angelo of the Bears... wow... just terrible. I don't know how a crazed fan hasn't come out of the crowd at training camp and shot him yet.

Mike Brown with the Bengals, whoever runs the Redskins, and others. Hurney's drafts are as good as any GM in the league over the last decade. Maybe you could say Ozzie Newsome is better, but that's about it.

People bag on Hurney too much. He's not perfect, he's of course made mistakes...some would say they're good decisions, until they flop..then "yea, fug him, dam pos!!!"

Really though, it's a combo usually of the head coach and GM..sometimes head scout on draft selections. Still...Marty overall is a good GM for sure. He's savvy with the players.

How about D Jarrett ?Hurney has done nothing special.I think he has done a bad job all in all. How about keeping Morgan and letting Witherspoon walk?We a decent scouting team but that has nothing to do with Hurney

You name one guy which can be repeated for any other team.

Until someone actually goes through each draft class, then any feeling either way is just guess work.

Seriously? It's not like the scouts only look at 7 players and stop there - "Yup, there's our draft." Someone makes the decisions, and it's turned out pretty well. Look at the Bears, Lions, Redskins, Bills... I could go on.

Also, there's a lot more to being GM than just drafting. Other than the Peppers situation, when has Carolina ever been in cap trouble? When has a player contract situation ever been a distraction? When has someone ever held out (Beason for 2 days kinda counts)?
