read that article this morning.

pretty interesting that NE was planning on giving up a 2nd rounder for him they don't do that kind of stuff for really anyone, do they? (giving up early picks like that, i mean)

i'm loving the trade. it really took me by surprise. it's a whole new team.

didn't want to start a new thread, especially one with any criticism in it but here is FBO take.......

TE Greg Olsen to be traded to Carolina Panthers

Aaron Schatz: Mike Martz just doesn't like to use tight ends in his passing game.

When he went to San Francisco in 2008, some people thought Vernon Davis would have huge success in Martz's vertical offense; Davis had just 358 yards. Martz left, and Davis exploded the following year. Last year, Martz went to Chicago. Some people thought Olsen would have a big year. Instead, Olsen had 404 yards, nearly 200 fewer than each of the two prior seasons. Now Olsen is in Carolina and Martz can have what he wants: a blocking-first tight end, Matt Spaeth.

As for what Olsen will do in Carolina: He has never had a DVOA (a measure of efficiency per play) above 0 percent since he entered the NFL. Only once has he had a catch rate above 60 percent; the average for tight ends is about 65 percent. He has a rookie quarterback too.

In other words, don't expect a big year.

Rookie QB comment is legit.

I would mention to the writer that Chud is the TE guy and Olsens College coach. :boxing_smiley:

Good read tho.

there was a discussion a while back regarding analysis that rokkie QBs don't really favor any position above any other more than vet QBs do. TEs aren't necessarily a rookie QBs best friend anymore than they are any other QBs.

i don't expect anyone on the team to have good "fantasy" receiving numbers. none are going to be stat monsters and it isn't just because we have a rookie QB, although that will play a part.

it will be because we will be a run heavy team (ok, mainly b/c we have a green QB) and we also have quite a few targets to spread the ball to. between smith/olsen/shockey/gettis/lafell/goodson/williams/stewart, there is a lot of competition for targets when there is probably only going to be 30 attempts a game.

He certainly doesn't fit the 'complete' TE package that Rivera was talking about when he was appointed, pretty useless as a blocker. He also has more hype surrounding his ability in the passing game than is actually warranted - more like a top 15-20 than a top 5 prospect.

Just looking at a few plays of his seems to show it's his athleticism that gets him catches, not his route running or intelligence.

I would have been happy if it were a 4th rounder, then I would feel like it's a good deal for us. For a 3rd rounder, I feel a little uneasy.

Olsen was a 1st rounder, so getting him for a 3rd rounder is a pretty good deal for you guys. I just hope that Martz knows what he's doing. Now, when it's 3rd and 7, we will have 3 WRs going out for a pass while the TE stays in and blocks. By picking up Roy Williams, we finally have a legitimate number one WR assuming he can handle that role and I think he can. This deal works well for both teams. We got something for a guy who we didn't utilize much and who was going to be gone next year anyway. You guys got a very good pass catching WR in his prime for only a 3rd round pick.

Don't forget too that the 3rd round pick is probably going to be a very early pick. JMHO.

Bears fans.

No matter how high it is, it's yet another loss of the draft class for your GM.

Write it down. The Bears are never, ever, going to win the Superbowl with Mike Martz as the coordinator. Just like the NFL passed by John Fox, they have passed by Martz.

Only coaches who 'adjust' make it these days.

well, roy williams has been so successful with his other two teams so it's hard to imagine him not being successful there.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
