The Biggest Losers: Carolina

D- Will - is a 28 year old RB. RB's have shorter NFL useful lives than they use to, and young RB's are producing results and being picked up cheap in the draft. It's a lot on $$$ in the position and another valid argument.

Here's the thing... about DWill...

Out of our RBs, there are only two proven runners. Williams and Stewart. Goodson has had flashes of productivity, and could be coming into his stride, but Sutton is a question mark, and the others are there for depth.

So, what do our opponents focus on? The run game? Oh... look... we have the #1 overall draft pick with Newton, who had a stellar career in college, posting impressive PASSING AND RUNNING numbers and winning it all. Does anyone want to take a chance on ignoring him?

So you blitz Newton, well, guess what... if we call a run play on a blitz, our RBs can gash the fug out of the defense for huge yardage and/or TDs.

Keeping Williams was important. Probably spent a little too much, but that's ok. We have the room. There's not one SINGLE Free Agent out there that will give us the balance of threat that Williams staying would have.

Bottom line is this--Hurney's actions reek of desperation. I am glad we re-signed our core, but we could have come away with a stud CB and/or DT. He gave 5 year deals to players who rely on speed to succeed. They hit the wall at 30, and they are all 28. There is no reason we should not have a stud DT and a solid CB right now. Josh Wilson (CB) signed a 3 year deal with Washington for about $16 million, 8 guaranteed. We are signing bargain basement scrubs, a 32-year old DT who nobody has heard of. We still have not signed a draft pick. Yes, we preserved our core-by spending $158 million over the next 5 years on 4 players--and not one of them is a QB, CB, or WR!. Our need positions CB and DT--how are we better?

I understand going hard at CJ. I like the Anderson deal, sorta. But TD and DW--I think both are terrific players--makes us look stupid.

Williams is the only one I can't argue. I like the signing but see the other side as we have a pretty good group at RB either way.

We know nothing at all about the contract Davis signed. I'll bet you it's structured so that he's a very easy cut should he get injured again. We wouldn't sign a guy with two ACL/MCL tears to a long contract without protecting ourselves.

Mare is getting paid as a top 5 kicker because he's been very good for a while up in Seattle of all places. He accuracy is virtually identical to Kasay's and he has more TB's than Lloyd. He's younger than Kasay by several years.
