Peppers and the Redskins

Recommended Posts

Redskins fan here from Asheville.

some idiot posted in the Redskins forum that we should trade for Peppers.

After all but crucifying the guy I went to see what was going on with the Panthers forum and if anyone seemed to have this far fetched idea over here........WOW

Ok, We have 12 Million in cap space. We need a RT, Sam LB, LDE. Those are huge needs for us. We also need depth at several key positions (Offensive Line, Linebacker)

Peppers doesn't financially fit in with those needs. Sure it sounds good if your playing Madden, but honestly it isn't going to happen. Especially after the terrible trade for Jason Taylor. Dan Snyder has come out and admitted his mistakes and says in the future he doesn't plan on mortgaging the future for a key player now.

I would love to have Peppers. I am a tar heel fan and I liked watching him from day 1. Heck if it wasn't for Football before 1996 I might be a panthers fan. Truth is you are not going to be able to get 2 first round picks from us. Peppers is holding you hostage from what it sounds like by not letting the Panthers shop him. you can't afford that 17 Million and haven't been able to do much in free agency, not to mention you don't have a 1st round pick.

If I see this don't you think other teams are going to see this also....Why offer a crazy trade for Peppers when he doesn't want to be there in the first place, and clearly the market isn't booming for him.

I don't remember who it was but someone suggest getting a 2nd for him. That is the best post about the situation I have seen. I am not trying to bash anyone saying you will get 2 1sts or even a 1st and a 2nd. I am just saying the market isn't there.

Peppers wants to go to a good team that will use him right. I think he is crazy for trying to leave, but whatever floats his boat.

No NFC East team can afford him other than the eagles....I would focus on them if you are ACTIVELY dreaming of the best case scenerio. A few weeks ago I would have said the Patriots will want Pep, but now I just don't see it happening. They overpaid for Adalius Thomas a few years ago and I don't think they liked that too much. The patriots don't make huge moves like that unless they get the right deal.

so which is it going to be, peppers for cheaper than you were hoping or keeping him for 17 million a year.......

p.s. Taylor was one of the only players that didn't have a workout clause in his contract....

Haynesworth, Hall, Portis.....they all have 75% workout clauses in their contracts.

It wasn't the only reason he was cut, but it wasn't completely made up either

yes he does....you know he does.

just go ahead and send those little picks over. you'll never miss them.

snyder has an itchy trigger finger. you know he is just sitting there waiting to pull the trigger. too sweet of a target.

just squeeze that little trigger, dannyboy.

snyder not wanting to mortgage the redskins future? riiiigghhhttt!!!!

Fat Albert Haynesworth got a 7-year deal with $41mil guaranteed. That guaranteed amount is pro-rated over the 7 years = $5.8mil annually. if you think that you are going to get more than one full year from him at the level he played the last couple years as a titan you are as delusional as your teams owner. No way is he ever going to be able to earn that full amount.

Deangelo Hall? That joke of a player and sportsman somehow managed to get a 6-year deal with $22mil guaranteed. that's another $3.6mil a year that you are going to have to pay after you end up cutting him (which will be in less than 2 years).

Sorry, bub, your owner is showing the redskins no quarter as he is burning not only current available cap space but cap space for years to come on high risk players. your future is being mortgaged.

I love that email screen shot....it is classic.

Your points about hall and Haynesworth are good, but I like the fit with hall.

Believe it or not haynesworth signing had a lot to do with hall staying as well.

Hall is from virginia, likes it here and knows he can play in the scheme.

Haynesworth is more of a risk, but the guy wants to be like reggie white....All I can do is take him at his word for now....time will tell.

the point is this team has too many clear needs to trade for peppers.

If we can sign all of our holes and be confident we are ready to go, I would be happy to sign peppers after you release him, I am just saying don't expect a trade

I think this is very plausable given his "Dancing With the Stars" offseason last year and subsequent injury-riddled 8 million dollar season this year. The Redskins wanted assurances that his offseason activities would be mostly under their control. Parcells released him from the Dolphins in-part because he spent his offseason dancing instead of training and as usual, Parcells was right.

First of all let me say that I posted something earlier in the month that Peppers was going to be traded to Cleveland. Someone I know that does have some insight into the situation told me and I thought it was true.....he was messing with me. So, I apologize about that.

This is obviously a message board and it's hard to believe people when there are not facts involved so it's fine if you don't trust me. Guys that I know and that hang out with Peppers (and Ed Cota at Suite most weekends) have said all along that it is the Redskins that Peppers wants to play for. His half brother, Stephone, said to me last year at a Panthers tailgate that Pepp was a huge Skins fan growing up (as were lots of people my age) and that he would probably play there if he didn't stay with the Panthers. That being said there are a couple of recent events that lead me to believe that Peppers may be traded to the Skins soon....

Jason Taylor was released today freeing up 8 million and making the Skins 11.5 million under the cap. The Redskins need a DE/OLB more than anything. If they kept Taylor he was going to play a hybrid DE/OLB position for them. If they keep the 13 pick they will use it on on a DE....most likely the kid from Orakpo if he's available. However, as Snyder always is he's in win now mode and DE's usually take a couple of years. After the Skins were very quiet last year in free agency he has come out with a bang this year.

The way Snyder is fitting these guys in under the cap is because he's counting on an uncapped 2010 year. An example is Haynesworth contract:

Year Signing Bonus Option Bonus Salary

2009 $5 million -- $6 million

2010 -- $21 million $3.6 million

*2011 -- -- $5.4 million

2012 -- -- $7.2 million

Totals: four years, $48.2 million.

Therefore, he will easily fit Peppers under the cap and balloon his number for 2010.

Finally, I listen to ESPN 980 in DC (John Thompson show) almost everyday online. Last Friday after the Skins signed Haynesworth, Brian Mitchell went on record saying that he believes the only way Jason Taylor will be released is if they have decided to go after Julius Peppers. His logic was that the Skins want to see what a healthy Taylor could do playing along side Haynesworth...he said the only reason why they would release Taylor was if there was a premiere DE replacing him. He said that the Skins didn't want to be embarrassed by releasing Taylor after giving up a 2nd round pick for a half of year of nothing. However, if it meant landing Peppers they would probably do it. All of this could be Mitchell's opinion but he does have some very close ties to the organization and the station is owned by Daniel Snyder. Well today on the show after the Taylor release was announced Mitchell said that it's his opinion that the Skins will go after Peppers hard. He said that he thinks they will be willing to give up the 13th pick this year and next year's first. He also said that no wonder Julius Peppers was at Komi (a restaurant in DC) over the weekend.....that part I wasn't sure if he was joking or not.

Forget if you believe me or not...I really don't care. I just want to know is if you're the Panthers do you take that deal or do you not want to play him next year? I guess all you could ever want is two 1sts. Also, with Jim Zorn at helm the Skins could really be very bad and that pick could end up being a top 5 selection. (then Bill Cowher comes in as coach)

what yur sayin makes since..i kinda belived it but until i hear somthin out of nfl network or of the panthers website i'm still gunna worry if we are gunna b able to get rid of him or not no offense cuz what yur sayin sounds realistic

LOL at believing what you read from press releases. If you believe that i have a lot of stock I want to sell you as well as a bridge. You can't possibly believe that the Skins released him bc of offseason workouts. They didn't want to be embarrassed for giving up a 2nd and then cutting him after half a season. Taylor didn't like playing for the Skins. So, they both saved face by using this sorry excuse.

Yeh, the workout thing doesn't hold water as they signed this dancing bear after Parcells got disenchanted cause he wasn't at offseason workouts for the Dolphins.

You can make a new thread about what team Peppers should/could/will end up with everyday and the conspiracy theorist in us all will make 7 pages of replies giving this stuff legs. Its amazing and sickening the way this works. Where is tomorrow's Peppers destination? Oh, the wheel landed on Seattle! Lets see, Julius really likes Starbucks coffee and was a huge fan of rain growing up. He also has a fetish for scruffy goatees and flannel. And I know someone who hangs with some of Julius' posse and he loves Pearl Jam. They send us a 1st and Hassel-turd and he is a Seahawk.

Do I believe it could happen on the Skins side, yes. Snyder has shown he will blow money and picks on players. His attempt to get Ocho Nutball for two ones last year shows that. Plus after the success of the Giants and Steelers; its reasonable to assume he believes he needs a powerful defense to win a championship. So I think Snyder would definitely make a move for Peppers. Cap is an issue, but Skins have always shown a freakish ability to play with the cap.

If in the original post the skins offered this years #13 and next years number 1, I would take the deal fast and ship Peppers overnight fedex to D.C.

However, would Peppers agree to go to D.C. ? I think not; I don't think he would get a Haynesworth size deal. And his agent wouldn't send him somewhere to play second fiddle. Plus on the skins side if you give Peppers a better deal than Haynesworth; I feel Albert might take issue with it.
