great post

If this is what it took to potentially have a top-5 DE and lure CJ away from his hometown and our biggest rival, I'm not complaining one damn bit ;) I'm willing to pay a little more in advance to risk having Chuck play us twice a season.

Not to mention we still have a sh*t ton to spend

this is just as important as having him.

I saw the news at work and was immediately overjoyed. Then I get home and check for what I was sure is to be the party thread about him resigning with us and half the people are bitching about his contract?!!? I'm at a loss. That isn't THAT much money. We didn't overpay. We paid him what he's worth.

Every year the new contracts are a little more than the ones for similar players in the years past. We paid him significantly less than we offered (and the Bears paid) Peppers and CJ had a better year last year and at least 5+ years reasonably expected at the same level.

If you were to ask the Colts: "Would you rather give Charles Johnson a 6 year $72 mil contract today or Dwight Freeney a 6 year $72 mil contract today?" I guarantee you they'd take Johnson. Guaranteed. When Carlos Dunlap or JPP or Hardy or whoever is the next great DE is up for a contract in 2 or 3 years their contract will make Johnson's look like peanuts.

Johnson got what he deserves, not a penny more.

And to the Falcons saying "we coulda cut a couple of guys and matched that offer but didn't because he isn't worth $12 mil" I think you know deep down that's horseshit. If Jamaal Anderson and whoever that other nobody is takes up almost $30 mil against the cap they should have been two of the first players in the league announced as cut. Jamaal Anderson isn't worth $3 mil against the cap, much less $13 or more.

Johnson is easily worth $12 mil a year to lock up for 6 years, especially when you look at what we tried to give Peppers last year, a guy whose effort is and has always been questionable and is on the wrong side of 30. We offered him basically the same contract Chicago gave him.

KC Joyner's 2 cents on the issue:

DE Charles Johnson to re-sign with Carolina Panthers

KC Joyner: The Panthers may have been one of only eight teams to allow 400 or more points last year, but they are actually close to having a very good defense. Their 3.4 percent forced bad decision rate (defined as how often a defense forces the other team's quarterback to make a mistake that leads either to a turnover or a near turnover) was the sixth-best total in that category last season. They also had a top-11 showing in interceptions (17) and had 24 near interceptions.

With that kind of base, it makes sense to re-sign Johnson. His 11.5 sacks tied for the seventh-best total in that category overall and fourth-highest by a defensive end. In addition, Football Outsiders game trackers credited him with 31 hurries. Johnson also had the sixth-highest tackles total of any player with 10 or more sacks, thus proving that he is closer to being an all-around defender rather than just a one-trick pony pass rusher. Throw in the fact that he turned 25 years old July 10 and it means signing him is a terrific move for Carolina.

"He's only started one year....he's only had one good year....he's being paid to much, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

Up until last year, we had peppers (who nobody was going to beat out for a spot) and brayton. Whether you agree with brayton being worthy of the other starting spot is mute. The fact is, up until last year, charles johnson was just part of the rotation. I'm not interested in the politics as to why, so don't debate it.

The fact is, johnson has been a solid football player from the moment he was drafted. He earned playing time, and was a big part of the rotation. Everytime he was on the field, he played well, and produced.

You can argue the limited role he had until you are blue in the face...it doesn't change the fact the he has and is a good football player.

He was the best defensive end available. Any team who wanted this guy, was going to have to pay fot him. He's young, and can get even better. His contract is not big by any means. That is the going rate for a defensive end of his talent and production.

Disagree all you want, it just shows how little you understand about the nfl.

He got paid. He's worth it.

It certainly beats over paying for an DE that isn't as good, and couldn't have replaced him.

Exactly ^, CJ has played excellent since he arrived. The last two years he's been tops in the league in stops per snap and QB pressures per snap.

IMO, he deserves the paycheck and is a top 5 DE in the NFL.

I'm very excited they did resign him! They knew that if they BS'd around, come time Friday they would be competing with other teams to sign him.

He had an amazing year last year, but it was the first year without peppers. And he was a full time starter, unlike in previous years. The man is young, I'm guessing 24 without looking it up. He has the skills and will continue to grow as an NFL pass rusher.

Next time to sign D. Willie....
