Charles Johnson Update...

I put this in the other thread, but I understand wanting to push your offers up across the board by waiting it out til Friday.

But, odds are, we're gonna be offering the most from hour 1 and have the ability to till the end of negotiations... So, only reason I would see in not accepting our offer, is you plan on getting the Falcons to up their offer just a bit b/c you're gonna take less to go "win."

He's waiting the market out to see what else comes up, I'm sure these tweets are tactics to drive bidding "meeting with panters went GREAT!" (looking at you denver/atlanta) and then "panthers threw an offer out" (suggesting it wasn't good enough).

I don't take any of this as a sign that he won't be back, he's going to wait till the last minute to see how high he can drive the price.

CHARLOTTE – If you didn’t think defensive end Charles Johnson was the Carolina Panthers’ top priority in free agency then think again.

Carolina Growl has learned that Panthers general manager Marty Hurney flew to Miami to meet directly with Johnson and his representatives on Tuesday in hopes of convincing the free agent to re-sign with the team.

Johnson told me just moments ago the meeting “went well” and the Panthers have made him a very competitive offer. However, Johnson said he’s also been contacted by the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos and is currently weighing his options. Atlanta is not a surprise, but it’s interesting that Denver (and his former coach John Fox) have jumped into the Johnson sweepstakes. The Panthers and Broncos also appear to be battling it out for the rights to sign free agent running back DeAngelo Williams.

Johnson had 11.5 sacks last season for the Panthers.

As with all unrestricted free agents, Johnson can’t sign a contract until Friday, but rest assured the Panthers have made signing Johnson their top priority.

“They threw an offer out but I have to see what happens,” Johnson said. “We can’t do much until Friday. Whatever happens, happens.”

That last part makes it much more ominous and negative than the original tweet was. He sounds like he's planning an exit to me.
