Since the NFL-AFL Merger, Only One Running Back...

DeAngelo Williams got off to an incredible start as a pro. The only guy since the merger with a better rushing average in his first four seasons than Williams was Bo Jackson (minimum: 500 carries). Williams is coming off of his fifth season, though, in which he averaged just 4.1 yards per carry and missed the last 10 games of the year with a foot injury. Jonathan Stewart is now comfortably ensconced as the top back in Carolina, and the team has pressing needs elsewhere. Williams will move on to Denver or Miami as their featured back, but buyer beware.

I don't agree with the buyer beware statement, he will be fine. YPC is better than Adrian, better than Emmitt, better than ANYONE.

Easily a top five back of all time based on running ability alone, and yes, I am aware that there is more to a back then running ability.

But the numbers don't lie. He would I am sure rank number one if we did not have such a horrid year last year with quarterbacking, and to a lesser extent, the year before.

Re-sign him!

I agree with resigning but not as much the "#1 running back evahh" statement. I think hes a phenominal player but if we can make it with stewart/goodson and save us $$$ id love to see a big name WR lined up next to smith. A good running game can only be established with a good passing game. IMO

I think people are not giving enough weight to how much D-will wants to stay here. He has a new baby girl and has settled here, has publicly let in know multiple times that he wants to stay, and apparently the meetings went well this morning.

Now we just have to wait.
