Cam given #1 (Update and he is Keeping the Number)

If it was an unspoken rule before (and I'm with teeray, I've heard it repeated often enough but never by anyone who would actually know) then I'd say it's a big statement by JR to let Cam wear #1. Says "we're entering a new era, you're our highest drafted QB. Now make me proud and go win me some GD games."

This stuff about "wah I don't think anyone should wear #1 because that number's for the fans!" is lame. Not trying to single anyone out, but that whole concept is a bit weak, in my opinion. The fans aren't on the gd field. If the fans need a number, give us # A BAJILLION to represent the amount of money we support them with.

Whatever makes our #1 overall pick happy makes me happy. A happy employee is a productive employee.

I think it did exist before because I can remember seeing it repeated from what I considered reliable sources.

So why the change? Good question, but one that probably can be answered in terms of context.

For example, why the change from totally avoiding guys with character concerns and reputations for being bad boys? Why the willingness to use the number one pick on a 'boom or bust' position when that was avoided before? Why the change from a head coach known for being cautious to a coach who believes in all-out attack all the time?

And for that matter, why the release of a kicker who has been on every Panthers roster since the beginning of their existence?

I've begun to think the last few years have worn on Jerry Richardson more than we know.

And thus, the times they are a changin'.

I just noticed there is no #1 listed on the official site. Cam doesn't have a number on there. Maybe he is still negotiating with Clausen quietly behind the scenes.
