Maybe the reason why we haven't heard about a possible Peppers trade?

Well, I think all of this could have been worked out last year. They could have signed Gross to a cheaper contract before he became an all pro pro bowl, big name LT. Then Peppers couldn't have put the team in the bind he did forcing them to work out a deal at the last minute with Gross so they could use the tag on Pep. The blame falls right on Hurney!

The Panthers tried to get a deal done last year with Gross but it didn't work out, so they tagged him. They also gave Peppers a VERY generous offer last year but he wouldn't accept it. So how is this Hurney's fault?

You are assuming that the Panthers would accept a trade that late in the game. If they are going into camp with no replacement for Peppers, they will nix the whole thing. Then Peppers has to decide to either sign the tender and get paid just under $17 million for a few months work or sit out the year and get nothing. Which do you think he will do?

No player has sat out with that much on the table. Well, since the panthers traded for a FA bust that sat out for a year.

Do I think Pep will sit out the year and not sign the tender? No...but I do keep in mind that it won't affect his accrued FA years if he doesn't...and he didn't take that big $$ contract so I don't think $$ is his #1motivation. I wouldn't actually be that shocked if he did sit out the whole year.

Huh?

What does that have to do with this?

I didnt say Hurney isnt a good GM, I just dont agree with what he's doing here..

Well, you did not include a provision in that it was inclusive to this one incident, so I went there...

I would be shocked if he sat out. I think he may surely threaten to do so but it would make no sense to actually follow through.

It gives traction to the idea that his motivation is suspect, brands him as not a team player, loses a year which is a big deal at 30 and he is no better off next year either.

In that scenario his 2009 salary was 0 since he didn't play and he didn't sign his tender and nothing was guaranteed. I wonder if we have to give him 20% over the 17 million in 2010 since he didn't earn anything, or if that goes away and we only have to pay him the average of the top 5 if we franchise him again.

Maybe I am in the minority, but I would rather have Peppers just sign the franchise tender so we have the flexibility to negotiate on our own. His agent can still get offers, but at least the FO can explore their own options.

I think this may be why we haven't heard anything yet, along with the fact that the Panthers are waiting for the first wave of free agents to go through...

i agree. then we could shop him to make deals we want, rather than waiting around for his agent to bring us deals that they want.

take the bull by the horns rather than wait around to be gored. we already missed out on a very cheap cassel and if cutler is possibly available, they are both better QB's than jake and cutler would be an upgrade. he has mad arm strength and can get the ball in to smitty rather than throwing wounded ducks and expecting steve to go up in double coverage and make amazing catches every single time.

Now that's an intriguing question. I can't imagine it playing out that way, but I would love to know the answer to the question either way.
