So 30 million in cap room...who to sign?

You also have to factor in trades or cuts. Steve Smith being traded and Tyler Brayton getting cut would add 10 million.

Trading Smith would drop his cap hit but you have to factor on how much we pay for his replacement. In the end the moves saves little. As for Brayton any signing bonus he received which was deferred is accelerated if he is cut. I don't know how much that saves us at this point.

In any event the net savings would we well below 10 million when you factor replacing them with free agents.

We also still have the rights to Kalil and Beason, but, you notice those names are still getting tossed around.

yeah, so if they spend time working on Cam, Beason and Kalil......then that is energy they can't focus on the guys who the entire league is trying to woo. Those guys can wait until after the big FAs have been signed.

Pat Y made a good point....implied a team like Carolina might not be looking to spend like some fans are thinking....would front load contracts instead of spreading it out like in the past.

but you make a good point, both those moves are realistic.

Given signing bonuses are included in the salary floor, you don't need to front load anything to reach that number. In fact frontloading contracts would just ensure we have to spend a lot more next year and the year after. We can just do what we always have done and more than ensure we have enough this year and in future years.

I disagree. You work on the easier things first. Negotiate with your own players, get long-term deals in place for them, which would lower our cap a little more, and then you focus on the outside players. You know how much you have to spend, and how much you're willing to put into Player A, B, and C.

I think Pat Y's point was Carolina might not want to be as active as people assume. They might not want to go after a Joseph and therefore could structure things so that opportunity (gap) goes away....on purpose.

but you do realize the window to deal w/ a Charles Johnson or seek a top tier DT is VERY small. All of these guys could decide to sign with other teams with in a week or less........and that entire time it would be pointless to be hammering out Cam and Beason's deals as the main focus.

As you and I among others have been saying. Once we sign all our core group, there won't be alot of money to go around.

re-signing our core will have made it a pretty successful FA period.

still think that we will have enough money to sign a couple decent starting caliber talents (more than likely DT and CB) as well as a good few to compete for depth spots. we probably won't have a lot of wiggle room when we are done, though.

Brayton would save the team around 3.2 million dollars if he was cut.

I don't think they will have the room to go after a couple guys after our boys have been resigned. I think they might make a run for 1.....the rest of the FAs will be guys not yet discussed here (like there standard moves they make excluding 2010).
