Does Rice and Joseph both being from SC and being teammates at SCar help our chances of signing them (realistically)? How much do guys really think about those things when looking for a new team?

i think it helps with those 2 guys. yeah nothing like coming home playing for the home team, but this what it is about.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

but they are under contract, the other guys are not. if we let someone else make an offer for cj we are screwed.

I'm pretty positive that he's going to test Free Agency to see what the best deal he can get is. He isn't stupid, he knows he's a hot commodity in FA and will use that to his advantage.

It's going to take north of 10 million a season and making him a top 5-10 paid DE to get him back.

No one values CJ more than we do so he will get more from us than anyone else. We will likely pay CJ close to 10 million a year for 5 years or 50 million bucks. At the way prices are increasing for DEs, in a year or two that will be a bargain if he does nothing more than keep doing what he did in 2010. Guys who looked good in Fox's system wil look great in McDermotts. With misdirection and overloads instead of straight ahead blocking, our new system will be much harder to defend particularly on the defensive line. I would not be surprised if Johnson gets 15 sacks this year which is only 2 more than he had last year. He is the lynchpin on the dfensive line and worth whatever we have to pay to keep him.

I agree, his agent is too good for him not to test the waters.....only way he doesn't take a look around is if Carolina makes him an offer he can't refuse (which means to overpay).

In order:

Sign Cam Newton

Resign Charles Johnson

Sign Barry Coefield or Brandon Mebane

Resign Beason

Resign Kalil

Sign Jonathon Joesph

Resign James Anderson

they have rights to Cam. Cam should be the last one they worry about.

Watch Cleveland jumping into the CJ bidding war along with ATL. The Giants could also if they think they are losing 2 DEs. I am thinking his salary will range anywhere between 10 and 11 million per year. Considering the fact that he is 25, I would give him a five year deal, six if he would sign one.

You also have to factor in trades or cuts. Steve Smith being traded and Tyler Brayton getting cut would add 10 million.

Pat Y made a good point....implied a team like Carolina might not be looking to spend like some fans are thinking....would front load contracts instead of spreading it out like in the past.

but you make a good point, both those moves are realistic.
